Major League Baseball (Part 1)

I didn’t think I’d like the pitch clock much, and I still don’t in theory, but I guess this is what was needed to prevent both pitchers and hitters from dicking around incessantly between pitches. And it really seems like that was all they were doing. The only time I think it may get awkward is in the late innings of a tight and important game, where prolonging the drama seems to be a positive thing.

Wow

what they call forever chemicals are in all kinds of everyday stuff we use, including our cookware. In those forms though I believe they are generally inert, I think the bigger issue is in the production of these products/chemicals were the raw materials end up in the groundwater or elsewhere in the environment.

Umm I have a few pieces of Veterans Stadium turf in my basement. Should I be concerned?

I said Sabo won’t see his Padres play this spring. I didn’t say he wasn’t going to spring training. And I didn’t say he wasn’t going to have any Padres experiences.

Yesterday, we spent some time in Yuma AZ. We circled the block that contains Yuma Police HQ, which is the site of Yuma Municiple Stadium, spring home of the 1955 Orioles. Then we visited Keegan Field, spring home of the 1969 Padres, and Desert Sun Stadium, spring home of the Padres 1970-1993. This morning we are going to check out Fitch Park, Mesa AZ, home of the Rookie league ACL A’s. They are out of season, but there should be minor league workouts ongoing. Then Sabo will guard our hotel room in Mesa AZ, while I attend a WBC Great Britain team “friendy” vs Brewers in Phoenix.

Tonight is the big night for Sabo, as we’re going to an evening game: White Sox vs Royals @ Surprise AZ. This is game #1 of the 2023 SDDC season, and it’s a double elimination game. It’s also a new stadium, and a new team, for Sabo (but not me). After he sees the White Sox, he’ll have seen every MLB team except the foriegner Blue Jays, and the cheatin’ world champion Astros.

Tomorrow morning we are both going to check out Cubs morning workouts at Sloan Field, Mesa AZ. Then Sabo is going to guard our hotel room, while I see Reds vs Cubs at the same venue. Friday morning we are both going to check out the workouts of the Mariners and his Padres at the Peoria Sports Complex. Then Sabo is going to doggie daycare, while I attend the Rangers vs A’s at Hohokam Stadium, Mesa AZ. Then we are going to drive to Lake Havasu AZ, for two nights on the river, before we head back home.

Interesting discussion from Scherzer about possibility to use rule to pitcher’s advantage to throw off hitter’s timing.

I would have absolutely done the same thing when I pitched, as I loved the mind games, but could end up being miserable for the fans. Then again, maybe it will fun for us to watch the cat and mouse stuff.

This has been an issue in my area in New Hampshire - lots of wells have tested high for PFOA and PFOS. There was a chemical plant nearby for years.

We tested my well, and it came back all clear. But, we just got a letter saying that a neighbor’s well tested positive, so I’m sure it’s an issue for us, too. We have a water filter already in place (hard water), checking to see if it’s good enough of a system to prevent PFOA/PFOS.

In actual baseball related comments: new security door at work, I set my personal code to 4550 so I’ll think of Pedro and Mookie every time I go in.

I always use that sort of thing to remember hotel room numbers.

Probably not if they’re anything like PFAS

Does it Count?

For those who keep such lists of trivia. In Sabo the dogs case, the decision isn’t ours to make, as such things are officiated by the semi-mysterious Competition Committee. So no polls. I’m really more interested in folk’s opinions anyways.

  • Regarding “seeing” a team. Should it count as “seeing” a team play included exhibition games. Right now, Sabo has seen 28/30 MLB teams, if we count exhibition teams. Of those, three he has only seen in Cactus League action so far: Rangers, Royals, White Sox. Same situation exists with only seeing an NFL team in preseason.

  • Should “seeing” a team count watching from outside the stadium? Sabo has watched MLB games at Petco (from the rooftop bar at Hotel Indigo), and Oracle (through the RF wall).

  • Should “being” at a stadium count exhibition games?

  • Should “being” at a stadium reguire a game to be played at all? Example: should Sabo’s visit yesterday (in a change of plans) to Fitch Park in Mesa count. They play MiLB there. However Sabo only watched a workout.

  • How about if there is no event ongoing? Most MLB stadiums offer tours. Should that count as “being” at the stadium?

  • How about if the stadium is no longer used for spectator sports. Example: Keegan Field in Yuma. Should Sabo’s recent visit count as “being” there?

  • How about seeing a different event? I’ve been to the LA Colesium to see FBS. It was the home of the Dodgers 1958-1961. Should I count that as also “being” at a defunct MLB stadium?

  • How about visiting the outside of a stadium, but not going inside? I’ve been outside of Fenway Park, but the game sold out while we were waiting to buy tickets. Have I “been” there?

  • How about visiting the site of a completely demolished stadium? How about a demolished stadium which still has artifacts?

  • In some edge cases, should stepping on, or playing on, the field make a difference? I’ve played Ultimate Frisbee at Kesar Stadium in San Francisco. Should I count that as “being” at a defunct NFL (and AFL) stadium?

Every answer is whatever you want.

I think it only counts as being at a stadium if a regular season or playoff game is going on.

It’s all trivia, of course. There are no wrong answers, The interesting part is discussing the details and edge cases. All that being said…

There are 23 spring training stadiums. Of those, 22 are also used for “complex ball” ~ official Rookie level MiLB. Complex ball is free to the public, and there are no concessions. They just open the gates. Or so I’ve heard, I’ve never been to a Rookie level game.

All these 22 stadiums then have regular season games played there. As well as spring training games, whcih of course are exhibitions.

Hohokam Stadium

The exception is the A’s. They play their spring training games at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa AZ. Their complex team uses Fitch Park, a few blocks to the south. As they only play exhibition games in Hohokam… should that mean that it is effectively impossible to “be at” this 10k stadium?

Another interesting point is that all those 22 stadiums, and Hohokam, were built for spring training. They weren’t built for complex ball. The one used exclusively for complex ball has bleacher seating for about 200 on the main field, and looks like this…

WBC is better than the World Series. There, I said it. Seriously though this is awesome. You can tell DR and Venezuela fucking hate each other and are clearing benches for RBI singles in the 4th inning.
