I’m pleased with how high you rated it, I was going to go with Katusha possibly but that song is a little too rapey. At any rate, from one comrade to another, can you direct some of this righteous ire at one of suzzer’s entries? The motherland thanks you!
I have to come second to even tie, so don’t spike the ball yet. Also, to further cement that we may be similar, I should add that I’m a decent fan of West African music (or at least what I think of as such, as a non West African) - Ali Farka Touré was probably the strongest contender after Serge for the foreign language category.
Should add I shuddered at the dislike of repetitive music. What other kind is there?
In 5th place, scoring 12 points, @JohnnyTruant with Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford
Right from the start I was snapping my fingers and tapping my foot along to the song. The clarinet sets a nice accent. It’s strangely upbeat and Grapes of Wrath at the same time.
Tier 4:
In 4th place, scoring 13 points, @ChrisV with A Pound a Week Rise by Liz Carroll & John Doyle
Only very, very barely missing the podium. The acoustic guitar lends itself pretty well to political songs. Many fall into the trap of just strumming along. A lot of the time this becomes dreary. Looking at you, Mr. Dylan. Not the case here.
He sings softly but carries a big guitar. I am a fan of Tom Morello as a The Nightwatchman, so no surprise that this is up my alley. He could be a bit angrier for my taste. Excuse me, the podium will have to wait until I am back from seizing the means of production.
In 3rd place, scoring 14 points, @pyatnitski with Adieu, England by Trembling Bells
Loreena McKennitt who I suggested for the story category does a lot of celtic/irish/british folk and traditional songs. This track is in the same vein but with a little more modern sound. Like a fusion of folk and indie-rock? Very good although it sounds a bit christmas-y at times.
P.S.: I noticed that youtube video has 847 views. If we all work together we can push it over the 900 mark and make someone’s day.
May be ignorance, but, in the English tradition, I think they’re one of the few bands these days properly taking on folk-rock (as opposed to just folk or avant-garde folk). Definitely deserve more listens.
Also, glad to take 3rd and stay ahead/behind @Jalfrezi.
(As a Lancastrian they mention Yorkshire way too much, though.)
In 2nd place, scoring 15 points, @skydiver8 with Martyr by Rusted Root
(That spotify link doesn’t work for me but it’s the only one I got)
The top youtube comment is “If Talking Heads and Dave Matthews Band had a baby on Stage“ and I could not have said it any better. We get a mix of bunch of different elements with the added bonus that the Talking Heads aren’t singing. Yes, please!
That leaves only
holy forking shirtballs…TWO podia!
Rusted Root is the same band that does “Send Me On My Way”, but everyone knows that song now that a bunch of car commercials use it and in the end I like this track better, anyway.
In 1st place, scoring 16 points, Suzzer99 with Didgeridoo by Aphex Twin
When I saw Suzzer’s entry was Aphex Twin which I recognized as an electronic music artist with a song titled Didgeridoo, the Björk of music instruments, my enthusiasm level took a dive in the Mariana Trench. I clicked on the youtube link and see the track is 7 freaking minutes long. shaking my fist in the general direction of the Americas SUUZZZERRRR!!!
Imagine my surprise that this is actually very good. I don’t even know how to describe what’s going on there. All I know is that it’s fast and in a good way. My body just starts moving when I hear this.
If this is your first exposure to Aphex Twin you’re a lucky person.
I have heard of them. If I ever heard a song by them I do not remember that.
About that… Suzzer was an early favorite to win this category and stayed a couple of lengths ahead the whole way.
Which reminds me:
Thank you all for playing.
Edit:
The list is missing: Ievan Polkka by Loituma and Big Time Sensuality by Björk [Feat. Talvin Singh] which are only available on youtube. Also missing is Martyr by Rusted Root which is listed on youtube but I could neither play nor add to the list.
Suzz is on fire!
@Jalfrezi to be fair, you must know you have a mostly very esoteric taste in music, eh?
Ha should have known we’d get trolled with Aphex Twin in the folk element category.
I’d also like to thank all the little people, and the gang at Spago.
Yeah of course. I’m mainly bored with predictable music forms but get excited when I hear someone trying something a little different. I do still like the old classics though, too many to mention, but a lot of those were groundbreaking at the time. I hardly ever listen to any of them…it’s as though I don’t need to any more because I’ve listened to them so many times I can replay the songs in my head.
I see music the same way I see other art forms… to be good it needs to create a mood.
