LOL politics in the rest of the world outside the US, Canada, Europe and China

No I’m conversational in Spanish and I know a few words in Portuguese, going to start working on learning it soon.

The author of a book I’m reading about the evolution of language claims that someone who speaks only Spanish and someone who speaks only Portuguese can likely communicate enough to share very basic information.

Is this really true?

Basically true. Source: wifey is fluent in Spanish.

Aside: you also understand basic Italian if you know Spanish.

Aside 2: you can understand written Dutch fairly well if you’re Norwegian and know basic German, but you’re hopelessly lost with spoken Dutch! Source: me.

I’ve been to Brazil a couple times and Mozambique, and can confirm you can get by with intermediate knowledge of Spanish, especially when you learn the numbers and common word changes (-cion > cao and -ales > ais, for instance). And a number of crazy consonant changes, like r at the beginning of a word is pronounced “h”, t in the center of a word is “ch”, s at the end of a word is “sh”. I am probably grossly generalizing but this is what I noticed, and eventually began to just speak Spanish making these conversations and it get a lot easier.

Also, much easier to speak in Mozambique than Brazil overall.

The two languages are related and have thousands of cognates.

That was my experience as well. I took a 3-month trip to Brazil, so about 3 months before going I was practicing Portuguese for 15-30 minutes a day and got a pretty good base just getting used to the small changes you mentioned. Throw in a few nasal vowels like French and that’s pretty much it for big changes from Spanish.

Yeah they’re somewhat similar. I mean, listening to Lula’s speech last night there were several passages that I was able to paraphrase back to my girlfriend in English and she was like, “Oh my God you speak Portuguese now?” and I was like, nope those were the parts that were similar to English.

LOL…it’s nice having a girlfriend who’s easy to impress.

Or accepting Lula won the election but fuck you I’m still president etc…

Israeli elections today. Exit polls at 4 pm eastern time. But unless its a complete landslide for team bibi it will take weeks for the coalition talks.

Regardless Bibi will almost certainly get first crack at forming a coalition from the president (i can further explain for real politics nerds if needed).

My own personal lottery was done a few minutes ago and my vote will go to pseudo communist arab party. The wheel had 23 slots for them, 23 slots for gay hating arab party, 1 slot each for the 3 leftist to centrish jewish parties.

Brazilian consulate voting:

STOP THE STEAL!

I’m shocked that Trump hasn’t come out and declared that Bolsonaro won.

Migrants just seem to love a deplorable. I’d guess because they are more likely to be middle class (or formerly in their home country). Based on my family/family friends I’d assume Duda (right wing asshole polish president) probably gets 90%+ votes in Australia.
