Black Crowes - Remedy best imo (but I’m always a sucker for anthems)
Thin Lizzy - Boys are Back best and iconic. I like Cowboy Song a lot though
Pearl Jam - Black best imo
Journey - Don’t Stop Believin’ is pretty damn iconic. Also best.
REO - I agree on iconic but think Roll with the Changes is best.
Credence - I think Run Through the Jungle is pretty iconic just because it’s in every Vietnam War movie
Van Halen - iconic hard but I like Aint Talkin Bout Love best - mainly for the line “My love is rotten to the core”. That takes some balls to put in a song you hope will be a hit.
I actually saw these guys open for David Bowie circa late 80s early 90s and loved What I Am from all the MTV-play of course, but I acquainted with that full album ‘Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars,’ and this is a good track.
The transition from verse to chorus is the shit… 1, 2, 3 You can’t judge her for that!
I think some of this is highlighting differences between countries in what was most popular. Calling Bennie and the Jets Elton’s most iconic song, or that Even Flow is Pearl Jam’s, is bizarre coming from Australia. Pearl Jam’s is Alive by a mile. Elton’s is… well it’s not Bennie and the Jets, anyway. Probably Tiny Dancer.
Yeah, I just looked it up. Even Flow peaked at 22 on the charts in Australia, while Alive peaked at 9 and was certified Gold. Meanwhile, Alive peaked at 16 in the US and Even Flow peaked at 3. Likewise for Elton, Bennie and the Jets was a #1 hit in the US, while it peaked at 37 in the UK and didn’t even chart in Australia. Most people here wouldn’t even know the song, it’s not on radio playlists. Arguing about “most iconic” is a pointless exercise as what you’re really discussing is “most shoved down your throat by radio stations”.
Thread is also meandering off topic a bit imo - like Pearl Jam manifestly do not have a “one clear BEST song”, neither does Elton. It’s not “name your favourite songs by various artists”.
I guess you get to decide what the most iconic Pearl Jam song is, since they’re a US band, but I demand international representation for Elton John.
The list of Australian artists with multiple big international hits is short. What’s the iconic AC/DC song in the US? Here it’s definitely Back In Black (You Shook Me All Night Long is the only other serious contender), but from watching US sporting events etc I get the impression it might be Thunderstruck?
Highway to Hell definitely gets radio play but it’s such a boring song imo. About the only AC/DC songs which do anything for me are Back In Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, and It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock’n’Roll)
But thread is “clear best” song and it’s not a clear best song when most people have never even heard that. Correct answer is that Pearl Jam do not have a clear best song.
Correct answer is that Pearl Jam do not have a clear best song.
Well, obviously, and I was literally about to post something like “maybe ChrisV can pen something thoughtful about art, taste, and taste in art all being subjective before I lose my mind” but for now it’s fun to tell people their opinions are wrong.
