I was mostly remarking about this sentence at the end of your post, which seems very personal:
Of course I realize fivr is a joke. But when you throw this into your post it takes the focus off the point you are trying to make and makes it about that. I also don’t see the need to belittle someone or extend some kind of a grudge over a bad idea someone had, but I don’t like shitting on people’s ideas in general and think it’s generally poor form. Just my 2c, do what you will with it. I should just mind my own business I know.
Please do not take this in any way as me siding with clovis or some other meta group as I think my history has shown I’m pretty impartial and non-cliquish.
Not a bad idea and could probably be automated to show posts with high like counts. I think though at a minimum our landing page will have to explain what this place is, and we haven’t quite decided that.
What this place is to me is an interesting place to hang out with like-minded, highly informed/educated individuals. If I want a detailed analysis or explanation of practically any topic I could get it here. Many people here are professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds, even though we skew heavily tech. It’s a very interesting cross section of society.
How do we attract more people in this cross section? Dunno, but the 30-50 age range with some college education seems like a reasonable place to start.
I’m thinking of a curated blog-ish front page with more long-form posts that can stand on their own as blog posts. This creates some incentive for people to create better, more researched, and more tightly edited posts that can be frontpage material. We can creaete a frontpage account that people can @ the same way they do bestof and someone(s) can use that to pick good posts for the purpose.
Maybe the goal would be 2/3 politics and 1/3 other to show that the forum has more to offer than just politics.
If the form of how to do this can be worked out, then it becomes easier to share via social media.
Well written and thought provoking posts from everywhere on the site should be put up on Twitter and Instagram with hashtags etc. This should be a daily thing or at least done on a regular basis. “Here’s what we’re discussing today,” kinda deal. Any good post (“best of” can be used for starters) should be promoted regardless of the topic.
Then people here who have Twitter accounts should retweet the Unstuck account and share with friends/followers etc. Get more people organically.
Not that my posts would qualify, but if there were an opt-out to having ones posts put on twitter or on the front page, I would. Second choice would be anonymized.
at least we don’t have to think about rebranding as a topshot forum anymore
with regards to getting more users I suppose the big question is what do you want this forum to be, currently it’s skewed toward people who have shit to do in real life who gamble or used to play poker and most online forums consist of people with too much free time on their hands so it skews far younger than this board, which sometimes is fine but you gotta be harder moderation or toxicity tends to fully take over.
a friend of mine had a great idea for a youtube/twitch channel with a super hot young girl discussing and playing magic the gathering, but behind the camera there’s a team of nerdy writers giving her notes on what to say.
What about personal invitations to influencers, or even payments to vloggers or podcasters? I have a few Facebook friends who are semi-famous and have a lot of political content and followers. Others must be friends with semi-famous poker players who are politically active.
I have no idea how much vloggers charge for their 60-second ads within the content, but we could ask. It would be good to get some of them on the site first, of course.
For that kind of stuff it’s fine. It depends what you wanna do. If it’s remotely technical though - anyone good isn’t likely offering their services on fivr, or however the hell you spell it.
It’s mostly a matter of “why would this person do this for $15/hr when if they were competent they could make 50-100?”
