I agree with almost every JT point about the different feel in Canada vs. US.
The only exception I would say is that in California I never ever see any indigenous people. Back home 30%+ of the population is indigenous and it is really jarring to never see any here or even here about their struggles and genocide in the news like you do all the time in Canada.
It was quite noticeable how much of that I saw when I went to Minneapolis a year and a half ago. Also, obviously, there’s a ton of NA in places like New Mexico or Oklahoma. It’s not like there isn’t that in CA as well, there are dozens of reservations here, but it’s not nearly as prominent.
Most of the people from the UK are so patriotic that you can tell them straight off “hey, I’m just doing this to see how you react to someone from outside your country talking shit about it” before you talk shit about it and they will still blow a gasket. I don’t know if it’s that Americans are expected to accept it because America is so powerful or if it’s just that most of the people around the forums are Americans so it’s mostly not coming from outsiders, but I don’t think Americans are more xenophobic or patriotic than average. More supportive of the military than many countries though, I think.
The other part of this is that because the tribal lands in CA are generally limited, most NA here don’t actually live on the reservations. The tribes are pretty strict on who gets counted and who gets to live on the res. So you and cassette may actually see more native californians than you think, especially since what we call the Mission peoples have very similar features to native Mexican and Central americans.
Source: SD County has more reservations than any other county in the US, and all but one, I think, are in my congressional district. Been learning a ton about this constituency for Ammar’s campaign.
So my undocumented sister is due in court on Tuesday, her lawyer’s told her she’s likely to be deported. Most likely going to be separated from her ~7-yo son who’s mildly autistic. So that’s gonna be a fun one.
You’re telling me. Huge falling-out with the kid’s grandmother who basically ratted her out to ICE or whoever. She’s not in custody but she’s been told it’s basically over.
See, you and the other bloke constructing endless straw men is what pisses me off and results in me being more brusque than I want to be with someone I like (I think). It’s shit posting and you should stop this bollocks now.
Having a pop at how discussions of super hero films (which are, despite what you say, primarily aimed at kids/youths) have completely taken over the Films thread does NOT make me pretentious or incapable of enjoying all sorts of low brow stuff from going dog racing to pop music to watching stupid TV programmes and sports, but once you’ve put someone into that box I guess it makes you feel a lot better, right?
Also, and very obviously, I couldn’t care less what a Gary fucking Numan fan makes of my music submissions, and no this isn’t me being anti lowbrow, this is me being anti pretentious twaddle.
“I don’t believe in the goodness of people like me, I believe everything bleeds from the fear of man” indeed. Give me a fucking break.
For a start nobody is patriotic for the UK. Any idiot who is dumb enough to be patriotic will only be patriotic for the country they come from. A patriotic Englander will hate the Scottish the Irish and the Welsh, rinse and repeat as appropriate.
It’s not the same everywhere. Maybe French people don’t go on about how great the nation or the military or whatever of France is, but they are fucking sure about a lot of whatever it is to be French being absolutely better than everyone else in the world.
