We all start with a genetic blue print and then are put into an environment not of our choosing.
If you had someone’s same genetic blue print and same exact life experiences why do you think you would make a different decision than the person in question?
John Calipari’s family was getting some Orange Leaf at the same time we were.
Walking back from a meeting with an advisor (this was in high school, but program made us get a college advisor) Tubby and I gave a wave to each other even though he was talking to someone else.
I have been going to the same hole in the wall barber shop literally my whole life. My favorite barber that I insisted on when I was young (when I was older whatever, but still preferred him, but I waited long times when younger) retired last year. That was a solid 25 years of my favorite barber. That being said, I was speechless when Joe B Hall showed up across from me when I was getting a hair cut. Joe B Hall won a NCAA basketball title as a coach which pretty much makes him royalty around here. Haircuts are just $15 too.
KAT I played a round of quiplash with him. Not exactly meeting the requirements. But he appreciated my Fuck Kaminsky, and Wisconsin is my anti drug.
Similar to the idea that all countries should be lead by women - anything we can do to educate girls and bring women closer to equal in severely patriarchal societies like this - is probably the best leverage there is towards improving society around the globe.
If punishment (or consequence of some kind) lowers the rate of bread-burning, then yeah, they should be. When the pipes in my basement burst, I don’t sweat over their not having had a choice in the matter. I get them replaced.
I don’t rate those studies at all. The standard one I’ve seen is to introduce a prompt where some ostensibly authoritative source discredits or throws doubt on free will and then an openly cheatable pseudo-test/game is administered. What is the conclusion — that the increased rates of cheating are due to people letting themselves slide because they feel OK about it due to not having free will?
Have you ever seen someone introduced to the concept for the first time? How they argue and argue and argue, how the idea offends them? Why is the conclusion not that the increased rates of cheating are a defiant ‘FU’ — no free will, eh? I’ll show you who has no free will etc.
The likely clusterfuck of the upcoming election isn’t appreciated well enough, even among many here. It doesn’t matter what the polls say or what the actual results are. Exploiting the chaos (it’s a ladder yo) is Trump and the GOP’s most likely path to victory, and they have made it perfectly clear how willing they are to use any means available.
There is no point, clearly. Now enjoy your meaningless life with this newfound knowledge! Or don’t… doesn’t really matter…and not like you have any control over it anyway…
Definitionally, you can’t have someone else’s genetics and life experiences. The person with those properties is not you, it’s the other person. “You” could not have been born in a different family or a different year or with a different gender. You could have not been born and a different person could have been born with those properties. There is no metaphysical “you” that can be plugged into a different person to see what happens. Empathy is an abstraction used for moral reasoning, not a description of reality.
Don’t you guys think the whole free will determinism debate is superceded by the fact that all of time has already happened. A point in time is the same as a point in space. You can move through it but the rest of space still exists just like the rest of time (past and future) still exists even though you feel you’re experiencing “a moment”. Even if you were free to make your decisions at the point in space time that they were made those decisions (and the entirely of history) have already happened. The big bang, the heat death of the universe and everything in between is happening simultaneously.
Start playing around w/ human brains and see what happens. Like if a brain surgeon chops off part of your brain (usually because it is cancerous rather than for funsies), among other things, you will literally be incapable of feeling certain “natural” human emotions.
