Itās still a decent source of information in the early hours of an incident like this, if youāre able to sift through the detritus. Every time I do this itās definitely a useful reminder of how dumb people generally are. And not even the political derp, just garden-variety stupidity.

Encountered conspiracy theorists last night. Iām in a small Discord group/in-game guild with some people that I play a PC game with regularly. They are very nice and a handful of us play together or at least get in Discord voice chat while in separate games frequently.
We were in voice chat last night (it was a married couple plus another guy who is my most frequent playing partner) when I heard one of them say to their spouse, āMan, I really donāt care about the Baltimore bridge.ā Iām assuming she was scrolling Twitter or something. The spouse hadnāt heard about it.
The third guy commented that people got hurt and she clarified that she cares about those who were hurt and died, but she doesnāt care about the bridge because it was all staged anyway.
I was like ālol wut,ā and she said it didnāt make any sense, that the ship was barely moving. The third guy said yeah, the bridge isnāt going to come down from a ship just tapping it. Woman said she agreed with him. I asked if they understood how fucking huge the ship was and they said it didnāt matter, it was barely moving. I told them they were wrong and even if it was barely moving, thatās an insane amount of force.
They then implied they believed it was a terrorist attack or fake or something. I said terrorist attack on a mostly empty bridge in the middle of the night with a distress warning makes no sense and asked if Q told them that. At that point they dropped it.
I assumed they were at the very least conservative, but boy, didnāt expect THAT.

Iām also the oldest one in that Discord group by 20 years. I donāt sound it, though, so they were pretty shocked when my age came up at one point. They also donāt treat me like an old, which is nice.
Its simply stunning to me how few people understand how to calculate force and momentum. The boat weighs 330 million pounds. Even at a crawl the only thing that could stop it is the very Earth itself.
Like, if you ask these same people what would happen to the bridge if you slowly lowered 330 million pounds onto the center of the bridge, I wonder what they would say? There are very few bridges on earth that can support that load

If it comes up again, Iāll ask them to imagine getting tapped by a slowly-moving bicycle. Then a golf cart. Then a small car, then a mid-sized car, then an SUV, then a truck, then a bus, then a semi, etc. Tell me when it would start fucking you up.
I just think your average human really really really sucks at imagining scale. We all think our Earth is huge and it is completely insignificant to the scale of the solar system let alone the Universe.
