From Neil Young? Basically nothing. He has six million monthly listeners on Spotify. Rogan has what, ten million listeners per episode? And obviously a three hour podcast is way more valuable per listener than a three minute Neil Young song.

Neil and Joni are already both fabulously wealthy, and they weren’t making all that much from Spotify. I think Spotify pays like 2/5ths of a cent per listen, and Young had six million a month and Mitchell had four million. So they’re making $24,000 and $16,000 a month? Obviously significant to you and me but to them it’s inconsequential. So the only people who are going to do this are already filthy rich over the hill boomers whose careers peaked in the seventies.

Obviously. That is the benefit of their privilege to do so and bring a spotlight on it. I wouldn’t want struggling artists to be pulling their stuff off even if I really cared.

Is the reason podcasts?

Hope not. Spotify sucks for podcasts. Even most of their “exclusive” podcasts can be found elsewhere.

Abba just pulled from Spotify because The Ringer is there.

Their differentiation strategy in the “music” streaming service space is specifically podcasts which they’ve thrown a ton of money at.

i thought the strategy was fine, just sucks that their biggest driver became rogan. are chances that spotify cuts him single digits or double?

I dunno but I’d guess single digits because feels like their bed is already made here. People who left or will leave soon will probably be difficult to reacquire, and the ones who stay probably don’t care that much, so I’m not sure that dropping him now does much in terms of recapturing lost revenue as it stands. Maybe it gets worse and they’ll do something before turning into the Parler of streaming services, but also maybe not.

lol do you really think everybody who disagrees with Rogan should cut their contract with Spotify (if they have one)?

I mean you might as well just live in a tent in the woods if every opinion is gonna force you to quit your work.

Considering the damage Rogan is doing to society, its not too much to ask of people with massive privilege and guaranteed lifetime affluence.

I don’t think it’s that it’s that Harry & Meghan are just grifters. They have a £18m deal with Spotify and they have been voicing their concern since Apr - lol.

Their Foundation - cos everyone’s got a Foundation - states

Archewell Foundation is an impact-driven non-profit created by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Our core purpose is to uplift and unite communities — local and global, online and offline — one act of compassion at a time.

We believe that compassion is the defining cultural force of the 21st century.

Hogwash - so yeah fuck these arseholes.

You don’t get into a royal family by keeping your soul.

Expecting them to actually cut off Spotify is laughable. These fuckers talk about the British Raj like it’s the good ol’ days.

Nice for them to say that now that they no longer have any power within the royal family.

It is surprising how many people think that the empire was good. Guess they kind of play down the bad stuff in UK history classes like America does with theirs.

I think this is as good time as any to switch to Tidal or other services that pay (marginally) better royalties to artists. Spotify has been THE streaming service from day one here in Finland and I can definitely see a movement where small artists are pulling their catalog from there and people are switching to alternate services en masse.
