Jeopardy! Thread (No spoilers until after the show EST)

Would legit rather have defending champion Jim host the show, he has a nice, reassuring baritone.

If this wasn’t my son’s wedding day, I’d knock your vocal cords out you voicist bastard

Honestly I used to get furious that Dianne Rehm was on my radio. Yes, I know it’s not her fault that her voice degenerated but shit man, you wouldn’t hire her if she had that condition when you’re interviewing radio hosts. It’s a big part of the job! I should not be forced to listen to any voices of a lower quality than Terry Gross at any time.

Is Brad getting a shot at guest host at some point?

I mean the sad truth is that you need a professional television personality or failed actor to do this. Pat Sajak can come in and guest host on a moment’s notice and do great. Some dork who likes trivia is going to be horrible. You don’t need to know the answers, the answers are on the cue card. You have to be pleasing, reassuring, and keep people coming back for more. Trebek was great because he did all of that and was also a bit of a prick.

Ideally, yes, but only because that was Trebek’s style. If Trebek had started on Wheel and Sajak had started on Jeopardy, that would have changed what the shows were like, but they would have each been able to host the show, I think.

Although it’s interesting to think about, did the host shape the show or did the show shape the host? If Sajak had hosted Jeopardy for 30 years would he be a bit of a prick because that’s what the show demanded, and would Trebek have been a big teddy bear because that’s what the show’s format calls for? Who knows.

Only poker nerds even remember who he was.

I’d like to see them at least give LeVar Burton a trial run.

Yeah Sajak could easily have done Jeopardy; we wouldn’t have known what we were missing but he’d have been more than passable. Although I wouldn’t say that for most of the old school game show hosts. Some would have been a combination of either too soft or not sardonic enough. I’ve been on a steady diet of Buzzr lately, hosts like Jim Perry did Sale of the Century which was mostly straight up trivia questions, and I think he would have been too uninteresting in the Jeopardy format.

Incidentally, I’ve watched a bunch of Concentration/Classic Concentration (Trebek also hosted this). It’s where they match squares to reveal pieces of a rebus puzzle. I don’t think I have gotten a correct answer yet, it’s crashing my confidence. Like before this I thought BBC’s “Only Connect” was the toughest show I’ve watched (hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell), but I get some right on there.

Also while we’re here, and I think this is a mild take because I think I’ve seen some people here say this before, but Supermarket Sweep is a god awful show. Who the fuck cares about throwing 10 pound turkeys into your cart every show?

not clear why he would leave the greatest job in show business for Jeopardy.

say what now

brian williams would actually be a brilliant jeopardy host

He’d probably talk about that time he was helicoptering over a recording of Wheel of Fortune when Trebek shot a sidewinder missile at him, nearly killing him in the process.
