Totally standard on what the quotation marks mean.
“P.J.” Means two words/names the first starts with P and the second with J.

Yes I’m asking if you can provide a link to the official rule so I can read it? I can’t find it.
They’ve stated that rule on the show many many times. I would assume the contestants get a much more detailed explanation off air.
Yeah maybe in the kids tournament you point it out, Champs should know what’s up
Are you talking about when the host gives additional guidance about the form of the answer? Saying that a “P.J.” is “Penn Jillette, for example” does not contain the level of clarity about the acceptable form of the response that you’re claiming. Let’s compare that to the most recent example of this type I can find which appeared during DJ on 6/21/22:
This is a much more precise way to state what you’re actually claiming and make it clear to everyone exactly what’s expected here (although it’s still ambiguously stated).
This stood as a correct response. Mayim was much more specific about the form it should take, and there’s a precise reason she said it exactly that way which is partly the point I’m making. And yet despite this example being more obviously incorrect there was no revision.
There’s an example where Matt Jackson (10/06/2015) gives a last name only in an “I.T.” category, is ruled correct in real time by Alex “you know what that means” Trebek, and then has it clawed back during break:
Again this is less instructive than what Mayim said, and yet hers was the one where a last name sufficed. So going back to 2015 I have two examples that were not ruled consistently, were not obvious to two of the better players to ever appear on the show, and even tripped up the long-time host who said “we all know what the means” about quotation marks. I’m not sure if it could be any clearer that this isn’t clear at all.
If you’re still not convinced, these gringo mofos said cream cheese goes on an enchilada.
Yeah. I’ve never seen anyone ruled incorrect like that. They always prompt for more info.
I don’t watch as much Jeopardy as the regs, but I’d be curious if anyone has a clip of anyone every getting graded incorrect in a similar fashion.
This and that FJ with the Hebrews vs Romans problem were kind of annoying to me.
Still a very entertaining TOC.
I’d like to try kajmak on a taco.
Kajmak is like cream cheese but way better.
Champ seemed to be struggling lately, was getting by on Daily Doubles. Still had a shot at the end. I’ll miss him, unlike most of the 20 game winners
This new champion who won his first game yesterday is STRONG. I’m calling it rn this guy goes 10+
He’s also a prick with no personality based on his first game. Beat James in high school.
Intense motherfucker. I might take the over though let’s see if he’s a true wagering assassin.
He’s definitely a dead-eye, deadpan fast talker. I thought the screening process was to weed all of the weird fucks out? I don’t really care though b/c I wanna see people who can crush Jeopardy, not some made-for-TV Johnny Come Lately.
Pretty crazy if he gamed the screening to be this kind of guy
If I heard it correctly, he beat Ken and Brad in some big trivia tournament? Seems like they already know him and he’s some beast on the trivia circuit these people bounce around in, so like anytime you have a potential super champion like that I think you gotta do it. A heel super champion might even be the best type b/c people will tune in hoping to see them lose.
Here’s his blog
and podcast:
Actually I take back what I said b/c it’s mean and I’ll redirect my ire toward the producers. Jeopardy! is the World Series of trivia, so a player being all business about trivia shouldn’t be a knock. He hasn’t actually done or said anything off kilter, and in fact I thought his blurbs are kind of funny. He just doesn’t present on camera as the type of easy-going milquetoast suburbanite they normally try to cast, which is a them problem b/c I know from many years of quiz bowl team that that’s not the type of person you normally find in these circles.
Neither did James, but he grew into his persona as the games went along.
James is a good example of someone we would relate to and general audiences would be uncomfortable around. He’s still quirky as a TV personality, and the producers would always prefer to cast a Blake Shelton (lol) instead. Like, have you noticed on The Chase that he’s the only one that honestly admits how frequently he doesn’t know the answers for certain (which is surprisingly high), and then often provides reasoning for his guessing strategy? I’m nodding along thinking “uh huh, uh huh” but most people probably have no idea what he’s saying. The others just say stuff like “yep I knew it” or “lucky guess.”
I’m behind on the Chase but other also do these things. Beast did for sure.
If James does it more, it wasn’t really noticeable to me.
He definitely does it more and is far more detailed about the thought processes and guessing strategy.
Just caught up on Jeopardy. Yogesh seems pretty good. Got a bit lucky on the last one.
The crazy thing is that he has had at least one really tough opponent on each day. No easy wins for this guy. He’s due for some fodder.
