The cigarette people could go to prison under current law! For lying to Congress and covering up research that their products were harmful to the public health. Same thing with opiod executives. There is no need for a speech-stifling modification of the first amendment.
One thing that has come out of these testimonies to me is that these diplomats seem to legitimately care about the country theyâre serving in (not that I doubted it, just that itâs good to see in such a high-profile inquiry). Hopefully other countries see this as a bit of a silver liningâthere are still members of the US government that are trying to do the right thing.
I think itâs really a matter of finding a formal way to separate viewpoints from facts. As dystopian as it may seem to create a Ministry of Truth, the ease with which people can disseminate false information to their own ends has really undermined all of our social institutions. Devoting some money to prosecuting the use or facilitation of the use of false information may not be worse than the status quo.
Yeah this is really it. I donât care what people say to other people one on one behind closed doors⌠but publicly disseminating blatant misinformation is just different. Itâs wildly unreasonable to expect normal people (who have a lot of stuff to keep track of and often barely care about the issue at hand) to be able to discern between facts and stuff that sounds like facts that are clever lies.
Itâs important to note that we really are in a new world wrt communications technology which allows broad spectrum propaganda to be disseminated on a scale never seen before.
I mean look at the anti vax stuff⌠that stuff is landing. Nevermind that vaccines are basically the single most important medical advance in the history of the world, people simply donât know that and you can convince them that vaccines are poison by telling them that one of the ingredients is mercury. They donât know anything about how mercury poisoning works, they just know that itâs poisonous.
Itâs not reasonable to expect someone of average intelligence with no scientific background who made a B- in Biology 10+ years ago to be able to validate which side is right on that.
