It's time to delete Metabook, Twitter and TikTok (and Reddit). Fuck it, social media is cancer - a thread.

More effective virtual reality meetings will definitely be a thing in future.

Thinking that it will be part of some wider virtual universe instead of something you just sign into like a zoom or a teams meeting is fucking insane.

I follow some cat pages on IG because I’m weird and love cats. one in particular really angers me and is a growing trend I’ve started to notice on pet pages that I find kind of revolting, which is when they aggressively try to monetize their page.

one lady REALLY angered me. her cat has some condition that makes him wobbly and falls over a lot. he’s also very cute. I followed very early in the page’s history, and found some red flags right away, particularly in the amount of things people were pointing out that seemed or looked like neglect on the animal. i ignored them at this time, because people on the internet and especially IG tend to be very stupid.

fast forward a few months and her page has grown a lot. those kinds of comments stopped as she explained the exact condition her cat had and would violently and aggressively respond to any and all negative comments about the condition or sometimes even just innocent curious questions about it. red flag #2

then, finally, she makes a big dramatic series of posts claiming her cat is dying of FIP. I can’t remember the details but none of them made sense, she started a kickstarter for medical bills and iirc it raised like $50k or something nutty. she claimed this amount was necessary for some crazy rare treatment she wouldnt specify for FIP, which is generally regarded as incurable and always fatal. red flag #3

all of a sudden, it’s like this never happened, and any and all posts about it disappeared, including the kickstarter. I’ve seen her ask for $ for medical bills since and will run ads now featuring her pet.

i guess everyones gotta hustle but this is disgusting to me and sad. i feel bad for the cat. i guess the biggest red flag of all is how often the pet owner herself appears in photos with the cat - pet pages rarely feature their owner. idk why this is a red flag, just seems notable.

I’ve found a few other pages that seem like they’re doing a similar thing. great place you’ve built, zuck.

yea she made a full blown series of posts asking for money. at the time I raised an eyebrow, but only when the incident seemed to just conveniently disappear like it never happened did I decide this was a con.

even if it was legit - you adopted a very obviously disabled cat with no way to pay for its vet bills? that’s really fucked up too.

I’ve become a fan of the emu girl on Twitter, I hope she doesn’t do a heel turn into scamming.

yea she’s great, I had a big crush and then got a big sad when I learned she’s only into girls

Gender is a social construct. You’ve got a chance!

god damnit, long thread that explains it in detail

heh, yea, she’s pretty deplorable. tried to go down that rabbit hole but it appears she deleted/purged a lot of the bad stuff, all evidence remains are tweets complaining about her from a few years ago. Apparently she put out an apology video that I’m unable to find.

social media and google is weird. It hides this stuff from you.

Emu girl is a bean dad now.

all the flags were there, i was just unwilling to see them. pretty white millennialish girl that has a random ass nonprofit farm? of course she’s a racist from generational wealth, how else could that actually exist.

they’ll never fix it because the feed algorithm’s objective function is based on engagement, they never give a fuck about what kind of engagement it is, and conspiracy theories/hate speech drives the most, so here we go. working as intended.
