The experiment I had in mind was how a society without social media adapts.
They still have social media. There is a pretty large Facebook competitor in Russia I believe.
One is VK and I think it is more popular than Facebook in Russia.
If Russia bans facebook does that mean that Russian bots can’t target Americans with stuff Putin wants?
I suppose there is a carveout for the bots and the bot-runners will still be able to get on FB and any other social media sites Putin cares to ban.

Wow this seems legitimately crazy to me. I get the whole radicalizing randos on Facebook but I sort of figured it was just that these people wanted to get outraged by illegal caravans to tickle their racist lizard brains and not as much that it is a coordinated digital war effort by the Russians to destabilize our society.
You haven’t been around deplorables and deplorable adjacents. They are profoundly lazy but above all else, consumers who are very used to have their rage drugs sent to them on a conveyer belt.
They do not seek it, it arrives at their face. It gets there somehow.
I thought this was common knowledge. I read about this in the early aughts as known Russian Psy-op stuff. Though th examples were in -stan republics and Europe and really amateurish and obvious.

Yeah I mean I have a general awareness of “russian disinformation”, especially as it pertained to the 2016 election, but still I find this pretty wild.
