Is this legal? (Religion and the workplace)

Really curious if there are any takes here from lawyers or non-lawyers who may know. Take a look at this job posting, specifically the specific qualification under “Faith.”

Were I to meet all the other qualifications, and I wasn’t hired due to not “Having a personal relationship with jesus christ,” would they be violating my rights?

Probably doesn’t matter, if you answer the interview questions honestly you won’t be a culture fit anyway.

That being said it appears they can’t ask you about your religious beliefs…

Its not something I am applying for, I am just taken aback by the brashness of it

Yeah, I talked myself out of a job at a company that wrote an app that made it easy for people to donate to their church when I spent too long saying I wouldn’t have a problem talking to priests all day long…

There are exemptions to religious discrimination employment law for nonprofits that are religious organizations. There is case law that lays out a test with a bunch of factors to be considered when determining whether a specific organization and position fit that exemption. Catholic charities can probably ask its office managers if they follow Jesus, but Notre Dame probably can’t ask the same of their physics professors. There’s a lot of gray area in between.

So, no idea whether this specific job and org are breaking the law, but it’s possible they’re not.

Just for some additional detail, it’s not a “standard” company.

I’m actually ok with “mission based” organizations hiring those who are on board with the mission.
