I am in the same boat and, every now and then, it gets to me. Not even because I love my family but because I think it’s a form of otherizing that is acceptable to intellectuals but is counter-productive to utopian ideals.
One of the biggest reasons that intelligence is such a flimsy concept, imo, is because common (or a lack thereof) value systems are a big factor in how we define things.
Most “intelligent” humans would agree that war is bad. But remove the common value systems and what’s the difference between a world war and a forest fire?
