International Soccer: POCH

Canada playing kinda scared against Haiti so far, or at least not aggressive.

edit: and immediately get a great chance, lol me

Canada with three shots in short succession off the GKs chest, might want to try somewhere else

also a legit pen shout, but despite being a foul everywhere else, normally isn’t a pk

might be the worst own goal from a gk that I’ve ever seen. Canada up 1-0

Slow backpass to GK, who whiffs but has time to recover. Plants to clear long and hits the ball with his plant foot to kick it into the goal. GK had a great first half too

Canada is going to have some depth issues with this format. Their offense is a lot of Davies-David combos, which is clearly an improvement and terrifying, especially for the less talented concacaf teams. However, the amount of energy they’ll have to expend in a window with three games per window seems unsustainable. They’ll get fucking mugged in a game or two. They’ll have to pick their spots I think. I’ll be cheering for Canada to make it barring it affecting the USA, but I think it’s more likely their first WC finals since 1986 will be when they host in 2026.

They got a very good draw in the prelim round. The schedule in the Ocho is so much harder. Every single away game is rough. Going to Mexico is obviously a nightmare, but even teams like Mexico historically drop points away in Central America.

I’m kinda pissed with the qualification process. I was hoping for a minnow or two to make an upset, but it’s by far the 8 best teams in CONCACAF in the Ocho.

It’s going to be a fucking brutal process for everyone, and I don’t think anyone can feel safe. This qualification is going to come down to how you do on a shit field with a shit ref in Central America with a few batteries getting lobbed at you.

Goal will be wins at home, draws on the road. 2 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses in away games will likely get you the 1st spot.

It’ll be compelling shit to watch though, that’s for sure.

They’ll need Larin, Hoilett, Cavallini to win them a point or 3.

But the teams like Jamaica, Panama just aren’t good.

You aren’t respecting the seriousness of Central American CONCACAF home field advantage.

Mexico hasn’t won @ Panama since 2000 in WCQ.
Honduras has won 5 of their last 6 against Mexico at home.
El Salvador has lost to CR/USA/MEX once the past 30 years (1997 against Mex), they’re 4-2-1 in that stretch.

The not great teams of concacaf (essentially teams other than USA/MEX/Costa Rica) are absolute monsters to play at home. Jamaica doesn’t have that environment, and that’s about it.

A point on the road against anyone outside of Jamaica will be a good result for USA/Mex. For Canada, any point on the road is a massive result.

Can someone give me a cliffs on what is the latest with the USWNT’s equal pay lawsuit?

Even better if you can just tell me how I’m supposed to feel about it. I don’t want to go through the work of forming an opinion, and it seems like there are a lot of details involved.

I think this is changing. So much of that was second tier guys getting swallowed up. Now for Canada/USA you have guys who have won leagues in Europe, played in the CL, played massive European away games. You just didn’t have these experience before.
Larin was the second leading scorer in Turkey. Playing an away game in Turkey is scarier than concacaf.

It still might be early for the USA/Canada because their good players are still very young, but before you had the North American teams on equal skill, less experience and were unprepared for the moment. Alphonso Davies and Christian Pulisic will not be overwhelmed by having to play in Panama. The past generations were.

Mexico has had years of concacaf dominance yet struggles away in Central America. It’s not that anyone is overwhelmed… it’s more of a “never get involved in a land war in Asia” kind of thing. It’s just a brutal place to play.

jfc, that’s horrendous.

Kinda feel bad but also wtflol at the kindergarten fuck up he committed. Literal 5 year olds would do better.

Is that what we’re calling this new thing?

I had figured “Octagonal” would be the natural descendant of “Hexagonal”, but I can get behind “The Ocho”.

How much would you have won betting all 1st half draws in the Euros so far? I’m guessing a lot.

edit : lol never mind.

Hexagonal was the hex. I like the ocho. Octagon maybe? I’m open to suggestions

Is it even gonna be a thing going forward? I thought they had planned that weird tourney thing that Canada would’ve had to win out of like 24 teams just for a chance in the hex, but it got scrapped due to corona.

Who knows. Next cycle will be super weird because of the 3 concacaf hosts as well. 6 spots in the Concacaf region. I do remember what you’re talking about vaguely though.

Details here:

Man that original format was shit.

Won’t Real Americans from Ohio throw a hissy fit about The Ocho? This is 'Merica, SPEAK ENGLISH!!

The Welsh seem up for it today, looks a good game so far & they had a penalty claim that’s not been shown again yet.

VARRRR
