Yes, I think it was pretty one sided. Jal and fidget’s attacks on cuse were over the line. Cuse’s histrionics in response were Bad Posting, but not nearly on the same level.
I haven’t even seen his memes (I’ve been assured they’re hilarious though), but this post nails it.
I was talking about Wookie’s opinion, but I’m only talking about that as an example as he’s a moderator. On the whole I find him a very reasonable poster. My point is simply that moderator opinion will inevitably colour their actions in this space.
I’ve never said that I objected to the temp bans because I don’t.
Maybe in what I would consider a way-too-deep meta analysis. I just think we are all too complex to make accusations like this. We are all managing complex and conflicting motivations and goals.
To say a person’s preference for another influences their decisions is something that applies to all of us. All of us. We all have biases and preferences. But we also trust each other to be mindful about such things and listen when someone suggests this with kindness.
I would call for someone to be de-modded if it became clear they were unwilling or unable to see past their preferences in dialogue and action. I see nothing like that here. What I do see is the obvious and persistent manifestation of human preferences in human decisions that we then reassess in hindsight as a community. Your example about jman is a fine one to bring up afterward and ask if there is more insight to guide us in future situations.
I don’t know what more we can reasonably ask of each other. The mere presence of preference in our decisions is unavoidable. Let us all commit to being mindful of that and trust each other to do so. Let us all, as they say, speak to each other in good faith on this matter.
I think one reasonable thing we could ask is for a two-day ban for jman.
All I’ve ever wanted is to be able to read the politics threads here without having to wade through tons and tons of self-backslapping bs.
If the new account repeats the same behaviour I’ll try the ignore function and see if anything legible remains of those threads (I doubt it).
What would a two-day ban accomplish at this point?
Bans are not to punish people. The previous temp ban was to contain a toxic situation.
I could see doing so to manage perceptions of fairness or something, but even if I in hindsight think jman should have been temp banned, this would now feel to me as though we are punching him to make things even.
What I value is growth and insight and collaboration. I don’t see how a ban would facilitate that process or this current dialogue.
But I asked for your position on this, so let me quiet myself and listen.
Seems like ignoring these six is the best play here.
Had already been done some time ago, my friend
It’s 90% effective with low to medium volume posters.
jman’s trolling was pretty extreme there, but, based on the new rules, the mods failed to nip it in the bud. To me, it seems like a ban at this point would require community approval. Modding should be the quick decisions that keep things running smoothly (and perhaps keep the hostility toned down). Some kind of ajudicated punishment for behavior that’s not currently happening? That’s giving mods power for no good reason imo.
I see what you’re saying. Much thanks.
Yes. Like a recent spat in the COVID thread, my perception was that a poster was rightly offended because the other poster accused the other of posting in bad faith.
For someone who is posting in good faith NO MATTER HOW ENTHUSIASTICALLY WRONG, that accusation is going to send the poster into orbit.
I believe one thing almost all of us share is that we value personal integrity. When someone calls that into question, we turn into booster rockets for Space X.
Jal & fidgets attacks came a long time after Jman attacked then Cuse came by and flung a few shots at Jalfrazi, which imo Jal & fidget had every right to defend…
Stop defending Cuse and Jman in this whole episode & go look at how it all started by cuse throwing bombs at Jal at the very start of the founding of this forum…
Then the pile on by Americans by hearing the rude posts by Jman & Cuse… @anon10387340 even came by to attack me when I tried to put a stop to it and accused me of being part of a clique, alough @anon10387340 did appoligise after I reminded him I was stepping up as a Mod and not some UK friend.
I’ve had enough of all this BS too… No wonder I’ve stopped posting.
Bastards.

Let’s make this a by-law for all of us
This is true. I’ve been part of PM exchanges where someone else was brought in and the people in the thread already were asked if it was ok. PMs are private and no one should be brought in like that without the other parties’ approval. It’s a pretty serious violation of trust and a more significant violation than any of the flaming and trolling that we’ve been talking about here. @j8i3h289dn3x7, is this what happened?
You’re right of course, but unfortunately it probably won’t matter with that mod because he won’t be thinking about whether he’s slipped up and allowed his bias/prejudice to influence him; he’ll likely be thinking how he can protect his friends in a less transparent way in future.
Anyone who’s worked for a bureaucracy will recognise this behaviour.
I think we were at least led to believe that the PM chain cuse was brought in to did have something to do with him including derogatory stuff. Is that not what happened. I will admit I have not kept up with this 100% but do want that cleared up if that is not what happened.
I guess I must have missed jman’s contribution to this kerfluffle while I was moving. I popped in at cuse’s self-doxx and the “jal and cuse need modding” thred.
I’m not sure wookie and jman are really pals. Jman was not embraced too well in 2p2 pol. Maybe they are pals if you go back long enough in some other forums or the mod forum on 2p2. dunno.
I disagree with your general point of view of how events went down and particularly when all of this actually started. Also if you have access to the posts refenced above could you link them? (If not no worries, but I need a memory refresher because I do not recall that.)
