I have been accused of being a fraud...

I entertained the idea of doing it someday, but I prefer what a few of us here are doing behind the scenes to actually running, so that’s a more appealing avenue.

Unfortunately the biggest reason that AOC has a real shot of changing our system is that she’s great at raising money. It’s extremely annoying that to fix our incredibly fucked up bought and paid for system we essentially have to buy it back… but that’s the most American thing imaginable if we’re being honest.

Big picture I suspect most American politicians think too much of money. It’s possible to take a relatively small amount of money and make it go a long long way. There’s no question that establishment politicians of both parties have become far too dependent on things like TV advertising to win elections.

I’m glad I took you off ignore.

Most of us have made huge sacrifices in our IRL social circles in order to do the right thing for COVID. I think a lot of us have also invested here, perhaps as one of few available routes to connection and community during profoundly isolating times. I don’t think it’s incomprehensible under the circumstances for Cuse to care about his reputation here, and I think we can all (myself included) can afford to do a little less reactive bullying.

Yeah, Cuse takes things hard, but it’s easy to consider why. Maybe we should all be a bit more conscientious about not making things hard. The whole world feels like shit. Let’s spread less of it.

Nobody is going to get power without lots of money. That’s just how it works. Like you don’t start a soda company to compete with Coke and Pepsi without a significant advertising budget.

These Georgia runoffs are expected to draw $800M in spending. To think you can win in that sort of environment without raising money is naive.

From my perspective one of the biggest schisms on this board is the people who want to have a conversation about the way things should be vs the people who want to talk about the way things are and can actually be changed.

That could very easily be all in my head though.

There’s a process for doing that and we’re in no danger of getting it.

Dude our supreme court literally made blocking rich people from spending money on politics unconstitutional.

The fair use doctrine wouldn’t get reinstated and never applied to cable channels.

Both of your solutions would require tons of rich sociopaths to voluntarily cut their own throats.

The only way to get the money out is to beat the money at it’s own game unfortunately.

Thankfully the money really can be beaten, and our political establishment is super incompetent in both parties. There has never been a more essential moment for a generational change in politics. We younger people have a lot more to gain than we do to lose.

And the way to demonstrate your superior political competence is by…

…helping to perpetuate Trump’s own conspiracy theories about the stolen election?

Eh?

I want to perpetuate Republican conspiracy theories about Democrats being socialists by having Democrats be more socialist.

Holy fuck someone just came in here and said bailing out poor people was just donating more money to the system. If the shark had not been jumped before this, then officially the shark has dunked on Kobe.

The schism you are looking at is between people who are talking about the way things are, they way they’d like them and what they think is realistically achievable vs the people who imagine that the 50 people talking on this forum are setting policy and have to craft their messaging because of their tremendous influence.

eta: Like I would never in a million years have suggested that Bernie campaign on open borders, but any other policy is vile.

The schism is between people too much in love with money and who want to be thought of as left but aren’t, and the actual left.

Right. For it to do any good from any one entity’s PoV they’d have to donate so much that it gives them leverage wrt policies ie corporate donations lol.

The only way this could work for individuals is if a large group of like minded people got together under an umbrella name and donated in a single lump sum, but idk enough about US politics to know how this would play out.

ActBlue has become a key conduit for groups to organize small donations to preferred candidates. Sometimes, they try to push for donations within a certain time window or choose a unique amount to try to signal where the money is coming from. Candidates notice when they get a bump in donations that appear inspired by certain events.
