All of this shit about people living in their vehicles is like it’s straight out of an old cyberpunk novel.
thx for sharing your experience.
Did you ever see the UP series documentary film? It’s some profound shit.
For a period of time I know I identified most with the clearly damaged Neil Hughes. He was homeless in Scotland for a time. Haunting stuff.
Glad you made it out!
Love me a little more. I’m a survivor.
How is this spun as a feel good story?
Fuck you MSM
At least they’re learning to code
The viewer, who wishes to remain anonymous, told 13 Action news that she was driving with her small children on Bonanza Road near the downtown area when her child saw the tents and asked about Deja Vu. The mother says that she was “taken back” and described the company in unflattering terms such as “immoral” and “disgusting.”
Fuck off Karen.
Please. That shit didn’t happen. She saw them, got pissed, and made up the story involving her kids in order to not sound like some busy body NIMBY bitch.
Maybe we should make some Republican branded tents and give them out. Let Karen get upset at them for helping to propagate the homeless issue.
Read about half of the thread and didn’t see any mention of drug treatment, unless we’re filing that under mental illness. Because from what I’ve observed in CA a huge, huge portion of the homeless are mostly drug addicts who don’t want to go to shelters because they can’t do drugs.
I used to go to parties in downtown LA in warehouses. A lot of times it was in places near where a ton of homeless gathered and at night and I started to bring blankets/water to give out to them and got to talking to some of them. It seemed almost all of them were on drugs.
I feel like a big portion of BoredSocials people who don’t want to conform to society are actually people who want to do drugs and don’t want to go into any homeless treatments because they don’t let them do drugs.
I think with these people we need to offer drug treatment obviously. UBI won’t be useful for these people either because they’re going to blow the full 1k on drugs every time.
I don’t think we should throw them in jail but it’s a complex situation. For the people who refuse to go into drug treatment the only other way to remove them from homelessness would be provide them with free housing and food AND allow them to do drugs in peace away from the cops. Society will never allow that though.
But yeah they aren’t being assholes just to be assholes, they’re addicted to drugs and don’t want to quit.
Yeah drug treatment is a big part of mental health treatment imo. I’m a pretty big proponent of drug legalization, and letting the private sector go nuts on improving those drugs as well. The stigma/criminalization , lack of treatment, and high cost of recreational drugs is probably the single biggest driver of homelessness imo.
Gotta do what they do in Germany and give them clean clinics to shoot up in and a place to rest when they get high.
My mom worked at a state funded drug treatment program for 20 years after being a drug addict with my dad my entire childhood.
Sadly drug treatment programs aren’t super effective. Addicts have to want to be clean, not just get treatment. Something like 60-80% relapse I think. Though maybe coupled with single payer healthcare, quality mental health treatment, and UBI to give them some hope. even with a minimum wage job plus 1k a month they will be somewhat ok. But a huge portion will still relapse.
W’d still need to prepare for a lot of people who can’t get clean, and for those people I don’t think we should put them in jail. Seeing my parents struggle with it for a long time, drug addiction is an absolute mother fucker and they deserve a lot of empathy and help. Not jail.
Yeah this seems like the only move. I’m not optimistic about this happening anytime soon in America though.
I’m not quite sure how bad things have to get before you guys have a revolution.
Revolution? lol. We’re gonna Netflix and Chill until half the population is in labor camps.
This thread is a perfect example why US libruls are part of the problem.
Homeless children are a bigger problem than drug abuse in the homeless community.
Sure, it’s heartbreaking that folks with mental, drug abuse, or any other medical issues are subjected to homelessness.
If there was a magic wand that could be waved to make all those with medical issues disappear, there would still be widespread, permanent, and institutionalized homelessness. Just as the wage system requires a working class who is in immediate need of wages to work it’s profit extracting “magic”… so does the landlord system require a renting class who is in immediate need of shelter to work it’s profit extraction “magic”. The immediate stick, vs the immediate carrot of simply being allowed to live indoors, is unemployment and homelessness.
In the US, there are order of magnitude more housing vs homeless folk. We don’t have a “homeless problem”, we have a housing hording problem. Just that simple.
There are no homeless in Slab City. Or everyone’s homeless, one or the other.
Trying to solve homelessness by tackling drug problems is completely backwards. Give people stable, fulfilling lives and the drug problems will go away on their own.
that’s a great system
The Problems are wide ranging and usually stems from abuse of some sort, sometimes it’s just that some folks are never ever given a chance because of being born poor, sometimes all the money in the (what I like to call a cruel society) world wouldn’t be enough.
Instead of punishment for failure when renting of buying a home we should provide everyone a lifetime to do just that, after all we all need it and everyone else is safer for it.
I’m sure back in the day sometime long long ago everyone in the village got a place to stay, until some bastard decided to upgrade to a Cave.
The housing market is killing us little folk worse every year unfortunately.
