This is funny but it’s probably because you have this site in your cache. I don’t browse UP on a browser, so nothing comes up for me when I google it.

It only came up when I put it in quotes. But it’s possible that you’re right… Never the less, I think it’s only a matter of time before we’re on the first page for History of the World From a Gambler’s Perspective, given the lack of competition.

Also, how is my rake plaque not getting more love? I mean, I giggled at it the entire 3 minutes I was making it, so it was worth it even if you all rolled your eyes. :man_shrugging:

I stand corrected - quotes worked! You guys are gonna get me sued.

NSFW!

Just tell him that half of the 16 copies he sold were people reading this thread and he’s welcome.

He mispelled mahatma gandhi as “mohatma” gandhi in the title of the chapter and elsewhere, but it’s also spelled correctly in other places in the chapter. Tbf I didn’t know how to spell it but I also didnt try to write a history book and charge people money for it.

To break his fast, which would eventually kill him if he didn’t stop, Gandhi laid down seven conditions.

Yes, thank you for explaining that if you don’t eat you will eventually die.

What did he say about unrestricted U-boat war in WW1? I think its resumption in 1917 is generally seen as one of Germany’s biggest mistakes as Wilson saw it as rejecting US meditation and eventually lead to the US fighting instead, but it’s apparently a successful gamble? I just looked at the wiki quickly and it possibly doesn’t go in to the diplomatic stuff around it…

I suppose one could say that the North fought the Civil War to preserve the Union and would have been willing to restrict slavery to the South without ending it, merely preventing its expansion, but the South definitely seceded in order to preserve slavery.

Therefore, we still consider this an expert gamble since it gave Germany a small chance to win the war where before it had virtually none. However, since it did bring the United States into the war, World War I probably ended sooner than it otherwise would have, but that doesn’t mean that this wasn’t, from the German point of view, a gamble worth taking, even though a lot of lives were lost.

Yes, I agree with that and that was what he stated. However, it felt randomly injected into so many places that I felt it was setting up for something later on. He felt it important to mention several times for some reason.

Thanks. I think it’s dumb, but it’s ages since I read much on WW1.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from traveling it’s that spelling something from a different language in your language is extremely malleable. I’ll give Mason a pass on that.

Yea, that’s what I think, but the spelling is inconsistent throughout the chapter, otherwise there’s zero chance I would catch the error.

Ok then lol. At least stick to one spelling.

A big problem with this read is a lot of it is military history events to which I am ignorant because I am a bit of a pacifist and war never really interested me that much, outside of ww2 which I am quite fond of learning about.

So I can’t even roast this because I am so ignorant of the history. I’m waiting til I hit a topic I’m somewhat knowledgeable about.

As a side note - do any other languages other than English even have spelling bees? Spanish is spelled almost exactly as it sounds (with like a tiny handful of weird exceptions). Spanish spelling bees would be the most boring event ever.
