I listen to a lot of audio books. When the author narrates their own book, and does a good job of it, it’s a very different experience. They know exactly what to emphasize, when to pause for effect, etc. I’ve only listened to one where the author was so terrible it distracted from the book.
I feel like any big city near you should have a recording studio you can rent out. No clue on pricing, but that may be a better option then buying expensive equipment unless you plan to do more audio stuff going forward.
I think there are probably studios set up specifically for audiobooks. I just haven’t looked into it yet and have no idea how much it costs.
Even hiring a narrator who presumably did it for a living, both times it was an extensive project requiring many hours (for books about 1/3 the length of yours). So translated to rental of studio time, I imagine that would be quite costly.
Looks like there’s actually a place close to me. No idea how much they charge though.
I needed one for a project and IIRC it was about $100/hr. I wasn’t paying for it or in charge of selecting it, but I suspect that we probably could have found something a bit cheaper with not too much effort.
I’d imagine that with the boom of podcasting there are some cheap bare bones studios that can be rented specifically targeting that demo. I really have no idea, but I’d guess there are tiers of studios ranging from the absolute basic needed to record a podcast to a full on music studio, and everything in between.
I printed up a copy so I could see how the black and white images look, and if the text felt cramped at 40 lines per page. Still a ways to go before being a published book, including copy editing, which is happening right now. But for the first time I have something I can hold in my hand. It’s a real thing!
A proof copy of the actual book is on the way and should arrive Tuesday. I got my website pretty much working. The book clocks in at 500 pages even, including the fluffy stuff in the front and back.
TBH I’m spiraling a bit right now since for the first time in 4.5 years I have no impending book tasks. I have no purpose in life.
I will have various marketing things and I plan to have a launch party (anyone in SoCal is invited, @microbet). But I can’t do those until the book is actually for sale. I will of course update this thread as well.
Thanks and I look forward to it.
Is proofing something where just take a quick look at formatting or like a read-through to check grammar/spelling etc? If it’s the latter and you want another set of eyes, lmk.
It’s the last step where I see the actual book and make sure the cover, pictures, print. etc. look good. We’ve already done the grammar/spelling stuff.
you should write a book!
I need to go back on the road for more material. I’m gonna see if my work will let me take a sabbatical.
Go meta and write a book about writing the book.
Hey if it worked for Stephen King
Proof copy arrived today. It looks great! The book is also already available for preorder on Amazon, which I didn’t expect yet.
