HBO's THE UNDOING (no spoiler tags, read at your own risk)

Must resist temptation to read the book and spoil the ending…

First 4 episodes were good. I’m a sucker for NYC and making fun of rich douche bags. That said, if you’re trying to be the “smart” show, give the audience some credit. When you beat us over the head with “he felt no shame or sadness” we don’t need the next damn scene to be lawyer friend lady (who is miraculously always in the office at like 1am but also at her daughters dance lessons in the middle of the morning) saying THATS THE SIGN OF A SOCIOPATH.

Also, Lawbro take, courtroom scenes are laughably awful, you obviously don’t get to just make random speeches when questioning witnesses.

5th episode was terrible for reasons others have covered. Still love all the NYC rich people visual porn, sadly.

Yup. This shit is like cocaine for me.

My wife put on the first episode to see if there were clues she’d missed. Answer: no. Although it was a reminder that in the first few episodes the blonde lawyer said some very “Hmmmmm…” stuff. Also, remember when Kidman saw therapy patients and it seemed like that mattered?

Yes

Shifting the goalposts I see

I feel like the show is more focused on having big reveals than building a coherent narrative.

The biggest thing that struck me is the whole lie about the conference. He was planning this trip before the murder so clearly it wasn’t a last minute panic decision to flee. Odd that Kidman (or anyone) hasn’t bothered to ask him why. Seems like they did it this way just to try and create suspense about him being missing.

tonights the night baby! lets gooooooooooo

Twitter is running wild with Donald Sutherland theories, I just don’t see it.

haha i saw my brother in law last night and he was thinking its Donald, but didn’t have any good reason for saying that, just that he seems shadowy and powerful etc. I don’t see it.

LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO

I want to rewatch the show for clues but am hesitating after someone earlier said don’t worry, you didn’t miss anything important hahahahahahaha

It seems like the most likely thing is that the show pulls something crazy out of its ass, so Sutherland is a totally viable candidate.

They’re all guilty imo.

The question of who did it is a kind of MacGuffin to put pressure on upper-class elites and see them crumble.

Everyone played a part in this. Everyone either did something to contribute to the death or is covering up someone else’s involvement.

The murder itself might turn out to have been committed as a random act of violence. No one that matters did it.

some lols 5 mins in

That was intense. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. Major plot holes, lol court room scenes, but I was still riveted. Hugh Grant was amazing.

I mean, if Nicole Kidman thought he did it, maybe skip the elaborate “get on the stand and tank it” routine and just…don’t ask Dad to pay his $2 million bail and hire the best defense lawyer in NYC?

If the premise is “she did it for the kid,” why is he left alone to be picked up by an apparently ankle-braceletless murder suspect father?

Also they kept saying the prosecution’s case was strong or whatever, but it was terrible! They didn’t have a murder weapon and there were several plausible alternative suspects!

All that said I was super into it and I actually really like the asshole sociopath having done it. But they needed to be way more subtle, the narcissistic sociopath genre is pretty advanced at this point after Tony Soprano, Don Draper and Donald Trump.

Yeah there were tons of holes and and general ridiculousness but the finale was very well done. I was entertained.

guess I’m in the minority but i thought it sucked, no big reveal really, I was laughing during the last scene, it was absurd.
