Man who claimed to have bomb at headquarters of Spokane Democrats in police custody
A man carrying what he said was a bomb walked into the building housing the headquarters of the Spokane County Democratic Party on Wednesday morning, Spokane Police said.
As occupants of the building fled, the man passed over a written document to someone inside and briefly “detained” one other person, said Sgt. Terry Preuninger, a Spokane Police spokesperson.
Witnesses said he carried a bag or a pack with wires coming out of it, Preuninger said. The man, who surrendered shortly after police arrived, also started a small fire in the building, Preuninger said, that went out shortly after police discovered it.
I’m sure this didn’t have anything to do with Trump and his surrogates explicitly calling for violence and civil war. Probably just an isolated case of mental illness.
Let’s not jump to conclusions. It may be economic anxiety.

As much as I want to blame the GOP, right wing assholes are gaining ground basically everywhere in the world right now. There’s probably something to say about the internet generally, and social media specifically, activating historic levels of loneliness and resentment. Zuck might be the literal WOAT by the time this plays itself out.

Are they, though? After the huge Trump/Brexit wins there was talk that a wave of nationalism was going to sweep across Europe. As I recall most of those parties got clobbered at the ballot box.
Yea it’s weird. Trump isn’t the anomaly, he’s the norm.
We need to figure this out or eventually we will end up nuking each other to death.
A good question would be - why is that resent generating right wing populism instead of left populism? Since, say, 1990 the left moved to technocratic centrist neoliberalism and the right moved to fascism. Did the internet shove everything right? Reagan and Clinton both represented big moves right for America parties and they preceded the dominance of Facebook. Globalization as policy preceded Facebook.
It does seem clear that unregulated internet has dramatically moved the needle on society wide agreement on reality, and the institutions of the West are collapsing under that weight because they weren’t designed to bear it. But I think the war against fascism was already being lost, social media was more like a new weapons technology that was adopted first by one side with conclusive results.
