GOP Insanity Containment: Beets, Gazpacho, and Lube

All true except that Biden didn’t win the 65+ group.

But yeah the fact that Trump gained 11 million voters from 2016 to 2020 is mind boggling.

I think its a open question of what “sudden” looks like. Is it explosive political violence (a successful Jan 6 attack with dead Senators), a sudden economic catastrophe with widespread financial system failures, a sudden takeover of government by 21st century Nazis, etc. There are a lot of bad outcomes.

Hopefully it’s just aliens blasting the planet away in a millisecond.

I don’t see why any of that would happen. They will legally have a stranglehold on the government. Legally according to our currrent supreme court anyways. They will just elect dumb fascist presidents who constantly throw them red meat and be happy and live in the lie that this is democracy and bathe in the liberal tears of voter suppression and riggage.

The only sudden thing I can think of is the first time they refuse to certify a dem winning, or use the new laws to send their own electors. But that will be legal according to our laws.

They will be happier than pigs in shit, no need to overthrow anything.

I think that’s just the 21st century Nazis scenario. Once they are fully entrenched in power its going to be really hard for them to resist putting political opponents in prison or concentration camps. Nothing owns the libs more than kangaroo courts and prison camps.

I honestly doubt they will want to rock the boat that much, but they will have to worry about being primaried by the people that are campaigning on locking up the rights latest boogymen ( although its almost always women ). If it comes to that hopefully the squad gets the fuck out of dodge.

I think you guys are losing track a bit of who is actually in charge in the US. I agree the trajectory is towards Dems being out of power for a decade or more, but the result of this will not be fascism and concentration camps, it will be open season for corporations. It doesn’t ultimately matter what the base want. What did they actually get - concretely - out of the Trump presidency?

I’m pretty WAAF but you guys are taking this a bit too far. It’s a common error to assume that current trend lines will extend indefinitely into the future.

In real life the first relatively small wave of climate refugees have already started arriving, COVID is ravaging the GOP base, and the amount of discontent among the currently young with capitalism is extremely high.

If the GOP manage to keep the federal government from responding to the needs of the country for another 5-10 years the entire system is going to collapse under it’s own weight. That’s not a good outcome and a lot of people will get hurt, the poor most of all, but there will be something that comes after it and that something is very unlikely to be fascism.

The thing about fascists is that they can’t govern. Period. Fascism is an opportunistic political disease that attacks hosts with weak defenses and if not stopped kills them. The fascism ends with the death of its host.

It’s going to be a shitty couple of decades, but every trend hits resistance and fails at some point. The GOP is already in real danger of wearing out its welcome with the corporations who actually own this country.

If you want to know what’s next watch the corporations. They’re the ones actually calling the shots. They very much do not want the host they are also leaching off of to die.

The fatal flaw in most “won’t be that bad” takes is assuming continued semi-legitimate elections. Once one-party rule is entrenched, you’ll see ever more ridiculous purity tests and purges based entirely on personal loyalty to the party heads.

Maybe. What do you think the S&P 500 components want because they’re the ones who own these people. I think if they GOP turns on them too hard they get absolutely destroyed and in short order. I don’t trust the Democrats to do the ruthless necessary thing… but that absolutely doesn’t extend to the billionaires. Those guys aren’t squeamish.

The longer I watch politics the more certain I get that both sides are owned by the same people, which in turn leads me to very badly want to know what the owners want… because they’re going to get their way.

You said the true power guys would bury Trump. How did that work out? I agree it’s what makes sense, but the money guys are now high on their own supply.

uhh. whats up man?

Edit: btw Radley Balko is the poster child Good Libertarian, the 1 in 100 who isn’t entirely in it for lower taxes and the desire not to be hassled when using cocaine. He’s spent the last 20 years writing about the outrages of police forces in the US. He used to write for some blog or other - maybe Reason, I don’t remember - in the early 2000s and he had a series of blog posts called “Another Isolated Incident” that was a chronicle of horrific police abuses.

Remember when Fox News tried to ambush Trump and bury him at one of the early debates? Megyn Kelly had this long winded takedown “you’re obviously an asshole” question and he just effortlessly deflected it with a Rosie O’Donnell joke. Republican voters are, fundamentally, just fucking assholes, and Trump is, authentically, also a fucking asshole. They love that someone can act how they wish they could and get away with it. This includes business owners and CEO types who might be polished but are of course, beneath it all, absolute fucking monsters.

Fun fact: Radley Balko once inadvertently ripped off an article I wrote.

Some other site deliberately ripped me off - one of those sites that just straight-up copies others’ work without linking or anything - and Balko found it when researching his own article for the Washington Post. He for some reason didn’t realize that site wasn’t legit.

I happened to read the Post article and saw a reference in there that was way too much like one I made in my piece to be a coincidence. Naturally, I assumed he plagiarized me. I contacted the Post, who got me in touch with Balko. We figured out what happened, he apologized, and added a note in his piece, giving me credit.

I mostly agree, like i said I don’t think locking up political opponents is likely. But it isn’t a non zero chance. When your only concern is getting primaried, and the base is screaming for the boogymen to get locked up, eventually they will have to throw them some meat.

Trump threw them a ton of red meat, and Trump operated in a world where he still had to worry about losing. Once thats not really the case, they can push things much further. Definitely not camps, but some evil horrible shit.

I mean the lunatics are mostly running the asylum now. You know establishment Republicans want everyone vaccinated so the economy could get back to normal, but the base doesn’t want that. Fox tried and immediately retreated from the backlash. If you don’t go along with the base, they will find someone who will.

I do mostly agree the supreme court will open things up for corporations and the powerful. On the other hand the power dynamic changes when Republicans don’t need corporations as much to get elected and they have a stranglehold on power.

Like McCarthy threatening telecome companies. I think we will start to see Republicans bending the corporations to their will or face reprisals.

Yeah, this. The billionaires are not in the driver’s seat like some of you guys think they are. It’s millions of Facebook Boomers and allied idiots plunging us deeper into fascism. Texas just went back into the 19th century overnight and that’s just the start of this.

I clearly don’t see what they see. I agree that they are mostly nepotistic morons, which is why I think this whole thing is going off a cliff sooner not later.

Once there is one party rule the corporations no longer own this country. They do now because politicians need them to get elected. Once thats over the Republicans will have the power.

Do what we want or we will punish your company. When there is only one game in town corporations lose the advantage.

It’s kind of amazing corporations don’t recognize this and are still shoveling money to Republicans lol.

Right. Once you have one party rule the politicians just start raiding and shaking down corporations. See: Putin.
