So when the original little mermaid came out, I can remember being a little kid and the church freaking out about “sexual” imagery in the phallic looking sea castles. now, it’s just out of a transparent hatred of black people. we’ve come a long way.
i went back a little bit to trolling conservatives on facebook. i seriously can’t help it. lots of guys put forth this very passionate argument about how trans people are going to destroy women’s sports and that’s literally the only reason they care at all about trans issues.
this is the line I came up with:
“oh, so you’re a big fan of women’s sports then? what’s your favorite?”
(almost all of them very proudly): LOL no i wouldn’t be caught dead watching women’s sports! they’re awful!
“oh, okay, so why is this such a big issue to you?”
*usually some nonsense at this point but still will usually insist that their only concern is the sanctity of women’s sports*
“Ok, so let’s ban trans women from womens sports, I could get behind that. so other than that, you’re okay with them marrying, receiving medical help for transitioning, teaching, adopting, the full 9 yards?”
“well………… no”
“so i see it is not about women’s sports at all then. cya”
lol, I forgot about that thread. when trump lost I decided there was no reason to fight anymore and it was definitely bad for my mental health, plus facebook tends to ban me at the drop of a hat anymore, so I calmed down.
I generally agree with this thinking, but it’s pretty clear that it’s not just two groups, but a multi-tiered hierarchy, with non-white foreigners at the very bottom, and megarich ruling white dudes at the top, and various tiers in between, like the gentry class above working white people, and men above women within each class. It certainly seems like the average Trump supporter doesn’t think they can get away with literally anything, even if they think Trump should be able to.

does she look ridiculous? sure. would you fire a cis woman for having similarly large breasts? no, probably not, so why the fuck is this a story that warrants any kind of discussion other than to be like “see, the trans people are gonna freak our kids out, look how gross and weird they are.”
I’m in a baffling argument about it. I’m in a semi-serious discussion group where it’s basically unchained-lite without all the nazism, and like, people are going off on this topic. I don’t see the big deal. If it was a cis gendered woman it’d be a funny meme, not a serious discussion about “WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINEEEEEEEEEEEE WHAT ABOUT OUR KIDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS” and I had to go down this rabbit hole with this rowlings-lite pseudo intellectual about how this is horrible for trans people blah blah like what? how? you’re the only one making it horrible for trans people by painting this woman as a caricature and an example of “woke culture gone too far.” fuck off with the pseudo concern “for the kids” too, by the way, kids can’t go 20 feet without being exposed to graphic EXPLICIT sexual imagery practically anywhere you go!
now it’s devolved into discussion into the nature of the boob itself and i’m like do you see how fucking absurd this is?
I had never really met a trans person until a few years ago and got to talking to someone I kind of considered a friend, and she was telling me about all the crap and abuse she dealt with from a very early age, it’s all this stuff, and I don’t understand why our society has to be such cruel dickheads about it - like in some cultures, trans people were considered very special because they had multiple spirits or some crap. instead we categorize it as a mental disorder. it’s so sad. I totally remember being drawn to dolls and barbies and shit as a kid, and being scolded for it, which doesn’t bother me then or now but like I wonder and can imagine how much worse it could be for a kid that very strongly identified as another gender
JK Rowling could have just kicked up her feet and done nothing but cash in Harry Potter residuals and been known as a beloved children’s author for a generation of Millennials but instead she decided to launch a bizarre anti-trans campaign and write terrible self-insert manifestos. I guess she’ll be rich af either way but it seems like an odd choice to me.
That’s why they call it “fuck you money”. Now you’re right that many people in that position don’t have that kind of legacy at stake, so I agree it’s a bit odd. Nevertheless, one of the nice things about having fuck you money is you don’t really need to care what other people think. Maybe the backlash hurts a bit, but I’m sure the piles of cash will be plenty comforting.
I don’t know if I’m on her side, and I think the Harry Potter books are dumb, but I’m generally biased in favor of the “fuck you” side of the argument. Props to her.
Writing a 912 page book about a “fictional” person and the mean people who accuse her of transphobia, and how horrible those accusers really are, suggests that she does indeed care. I’m sure the money helps but I hope she’s tormented.
what I don’t understand is - where is this coming from? homophobia I actually can understand now, because they’ve done studies and shown a lot of it is based in insecurity and repressed sexual feelings towards the same gender - but transphobia? why?
another thing I noticed is a looooot of it seems to be coming from young-ish women, at least on the page where I’m somehow the only voice of reason and everyone’s shouting at me for saying this shouldn’t even be a story.
