I always walked when I played whenever possible. I preferred carrying to push carts.
Although the last time I played at Torrey Pines, my old home course, they had these kind of robot carry carts that follow you around–no need to push. I could definitely get on board with using those.
My Dad is thinking of getting one of those carts so he can walk 9 on occasion again. Doubt it’ll happen unfortunately, he’s pretty banged up with back, knee and hip issues. Still hopeful we’ll walk a round together here at my place or a regular course. He’s still got game tho, played the course I just posted with friends from his league, shot an 85. As always, he’s deadly from 100yd on in.
Got out this afternoon, and played with a 72-year-old and his 14-year-old grandson.
Had a blast, exchanged phone numbers. We’re gonna get the band back together, as we all live in close proximity to the course.
Just murdered drives all day but for one O.B. on hole #2… the three 3-putts killed me. Had 2 reasonable birdie putts that I missed. Putted tentatively all round.
Scheduled to play my annual round of Golf in Japan this Friday.
I generally rave about all things Japan, but golf in Japan sucks:
-It’s expensive. Green fees are typically $100 and up.
-It’s an all-day affair. Morning nine followed by a mandatory 1 1/2 hr. lunch break (meal not included in green fee), before finishing out the back nine in the afternoon.
-It’s slow. Even without the lunch break it’s typically a 5-6 hr round. Kill me now.
-It’s narrow. The courses are cut into the mountainside. What would be in the rough in the States is OB in Japan. Bring extra golf balls. In fact, courses are so narrow here that they have a special “Play 4” set of tees in the middle of most fairways. If you hit it OB, instead of reloading you have the option of hitting your 4th from the “Play 4” tees. It’s usually the best option.
I was a solid single back in the States. I have yet to break 90 on a Japan course. My strategy for Friday will be to leave my driver at home, keep the ball in bounds at all costs, and hope to wedge and putt my way to a respectable round.
walked 14. and with my 5 cent head and an audience of 1, I duffed my first drive. I need to hit some at the range before playing, without the range, I feel like I have to reacquaint with the game, and sacrifice the first couple/ few holes to that cause every outing lmao
anyway butchered the 1st 2 holes, then corrected, then took the opportunity at the 14th green to jump back to the 10th tee
best round i’ve shot in a while. the ballmark on the birdie hole was literally 14 inches left of the pin, and the ball nestled even closer
Played the Black today. It’s everything everyone says it is. Long, demanding, humbling.
Played my buddy who is a 6 index that wanted to play from the back tees. I’m a 13 whose issue is short game not length off the tee so I didn’t mind. It says 7400 yards but the tees were setup at about 7100 yards I’d guesstimate thankfully (maybe 7150ish?). However it was 92 degrees when we teed off with a solid 10-15mph wind out of the West with some much stronger gusts throughout the day. It made the holes with the wind bearable and holes against incredibly tough.
We played in 4:49. Normally a round over 4 hours is painfully slow but the only waiting we did was when the dude watering the greens was finishing up on a bunch of holes. My phone says I walked 9.7 miles with 23 flights of stairs so that’s why it took the time it did. The other thing I saw that moved things along was that tee times were every 10 minutes with the time 40 minutes past the hour open to create space.
I finished with a 97 that included a 9,8, and 8. So 25 shots on 3 holes and still a 97. I’ll take it.
Luckily my driver was on today and I hit more than a few drives center cut or it would have been much worse. The only ball I lost was on 18 when I was dog-tired. I duck-hooked it left of this picture I took. Dropped it approximately where it should have been in the fescue. Hit 6 iron to 40 yards short in the rough. Then used my 60 degree to get me to 18 feet. My putt came up one revolution short to finish with a double.
I played Thursday. Played bogey-golf the 1st 4 holes, then on the 5th hole, I drained about an 18-footer with about a foot of right-to-left break for birdie. Perfect pace, as it just crept into the hole from the right side. Then I promptly 3-putted the next 2 holes and my mood went south.
I’ve shot many rounds in the 70s, but the round of golf I’m most proud of is an 86 I shot at the Torrey Pines South course from the Blues about a week out from the tourney after about two weeks of nonstop rain with the rough at U.S. Open thickness levels.
I played out of my mind just to break 90 on that day.
