Golf: No Bones, just Bonesaws

I like to watch Justin Rose and Adam Scott swing the club for the same reason. Crispy butter.

does this link work for you? watch his abbreviated back-swing and follow-thru on the first few shots. seriously try to minimize what’s going on until you get comfortable

When im topping and chunking it, it usually means i am swaying my hips back and forth a lot. Or i’m taking my eye off the ball too soon.

Shot a 44 on the front-nine of my local course Monday. Was walking for the exercise and it adversely affected my club selection os. Didn’t take the necessary time to notice pin-placements that clearly dictated 1 less or 1 more club, only considering the fairway markers lol. Hit the ball well, but for a very few full swings, and should’ve scored a smidgen better.

2 pars, 6 boges and 1 double. I’ll take it, considering it’s only my 2nd outing in 2 years.

Just played 12 holes for 18$. Pretty good value. I walked up to the 1st tee, whereat 3 youngins, all in their late 20s and with 2 carts, were poised to play the 1st hole, and asked to join them. We had an absolute blast.

Started cramping on the 12th hole, so it worked out perfectly. Walked most of the holes, but hitched a ride on the 1 cart with a vacancy late in the day.

3 pars, 6 boges and 3 others iiirc. the 3 holes on the back nine, I carded 2 pars and a boge, so was playing better with a cart and once I was worn-out.

So this week is Travelers. I’ve been going there every year since I was like 16. Travelers has done a hell of a job making it the tournament it has been when it was possibly going to be taken off the calendar back in ‘07/08. I thought it was going to die a slow death being the week after the US Open but it’s been the opposite. I don’t particularly like watching winning scores of -20 or better but the week after the Open is a good break for these guys and they’ve all bought into it. Also, the practice area is legit.

A couple of thoughts on the course.

I know this is bias and all but 15 is the best short par 4 on tour. I know there’s 10 at Riveria but that doesn’t have the added difficulty of the water to the left of the green where lots of balls end up.

I read earlier in the week that Bryson was getting it to the green on 17. Here’s a picture I took last year following Phil and Speef. The green is wayyyy to the right across the lake. So sick what he’s been able to transform himself into. I doubt it lasts but fun to watch.

I forget what hole it was, but did you see brysons 428 yard cart path aided drive yesterday? That was the funniest/most insane thing ive seen in live golf.

The fact he bogeyed it was even funnier.

Haha yeah. 10th hole. It’s actually kind of a rough tee shot. Slightly downhill. You have the giant oak tree on the left side of the fairway about 270 out so you need to be on the right side. Bryson was just a bit too far right. The way the cart path goes he literally could have been pin high. But he still ended up in a great spot which makes the bogey even worse/funnier.

without having seen your swing i’m guessing you struggle with coming over the top and slicing it? I struggled with that for the longest time, tried so many different things to fix it, it wasn’t until i finally started hitting off my front/left side that i was able to finally able to fix it, now i hit a sweet little 10 yard draw and working on breaking 80.

to hit a draw you have to swing from the inside/hit the inside of the ball, a fade/slice comes from coming over the top and hitting the outside of the ball, it’s impossible to do the former if you are swinging off of your back foot. if you try to swing from the inside while also swinging off your back foot you will not make contact with the ball, you will whiff completely. Most of us don’t like whiffing, which is where the over the top compensation starts getting formed.

always being aware of where your weight/pressure is situated (both left/right and front back, you don’t want to be too far left/right or too far on your heels/toes), is one of the keys to a consistent swing.

So while we wait for this weather delay to finish I’ll share what I saw today. Had a 650am tee time. On the 4th hole at about 715ish a dog runs across the fairway. We’re playing a well kept muni that runs through a very nice neighborhood so we just thought it was a local dog that got loose. We go to check it’s tags when a woman who was wearing a competition style running outfit (sports bra and bottoms/no shorts) comes jogging/running down the middle of the 3rd fairway yelling “that’s my dog!!!”. She was not looking for her lost dog but simply out for a training session on the course on Sunday morning. I guess technically the course is a town park but okay Karen you do you.

So I’d been playing like shit for a while now, so 2 weeks ago I tried a big swing change. I started hinging my wrists, which I’d never done in order to keep things simple. Well, I’m an idiot. I’m hitting the ball higher and at least a club further…when the timing is good. When it’s off I’m not hitting it any worse than pre swing change. So, It’s here to stay.

Scores at my par 30 haven’t improved but it’s a tight course and I’m usually experimenting. But my first few rounds at local courses went well. 92, 92, 89. Last 2 rounds were 98 and 97. First was mostly short game and putting issues. Second was yesterday, playing a difficult course I’d been afraid of for a while, decided to test myself. Narrow course, weird layouts and circus greens on several holes. Started out killing the ball but lots of 3 putts. Then everything kinda went to shit on the back 9. But I know I can shoot a decent score there.

I only struggle with a slice on my woods and driver. The other clubs i have a bit of a push.

I have the same issue with woods, especially the 3w. Got snap hooky with the D on the back 9 yesterday which was weird. So on the last hole I aimed a bit right and sliced it into the woods, lol. Re teed and did the same but it stayed in play but had to chip it into the fairway cause it was a dogleg right. Then a shit 9i, shit chip and carded an 8. Was soooo pissed ending like that.

I used to not even be able to hit those clubs so i’ll take it. My numbers are looking a lot better. I used to be like 68-72mph with driver, with a gnarly 15-20 degree outside in. Now i’m typically between 2 and 5 degrees outside in and my speed is up to 85. My instructor says we’ll hit 90 soon, which is where I wanna be.

3 wood i have absolutely no luck with, basically given up on that club. I just use a hybrid for fairway shots.

Oh yea and i hit 12/13 fairways sunday with the slice. The secret - when im having a slicey day, I just turn the driver clubface closed at address and take a closed stance. Then the ball will start way off to the left and curve back in.

It’s saved my rounds a lot, lol.
