Need an entirely separate bracket for blacksploitation movie themes.
Next we’ll also have a bracket for porn themes. The budgets are going up up up.
Hope I can sneak a few more in
Couple of Jazz ones:
Elevator to the Gallows (Frantic): Miles Davis improv
Blow Up: Herbie Hancock
trio of Irish ones:
Veronica Guerin: The Funeral - Harry Gregson-Williams/Sinead O’Connor
In the Name of the Father: Bono & Gavin Friday
Cal: Irish Boy - Mark Knopfler
All entries should be in the spreadsheet.
We’ve got a healthy 169 submissions with just a few being challenged as potentially not being themes.
Hyped to get to voting.
Thanks Risky.
I was trying to keep an updated list itt, but the 100 entries that came in Mon morning was schedule averse for me.
I think the flagged songs are all pretty clearly not themes (even if they are good songs that may even be original to the movie they’re from), and I think we should limit the field to 128 songs.
I also think what we did for the TV themes to cull the herd worked pretty well, but could be improved upon. So, here’s what I propose. If at least two people think a song that’s currently flagged as a non-theme should be included, we’ll put it to a vote. If at least two people think that a theme that’s currently out of the top 128 deserves a spot, we’ll put it to a vote against the lowest ranked song that hasn’t already won a challenge. And if at least two people think a song with enough YouTube views to put it in the top 32 is nevertheless trash and should be excluded entirely, we’ll put it up against the highest ranked song currently out of contention that hasn’t already lost a challenge.
Most songs have already undergone some discussion if there was any doubt about including them. Therefore my suggestion is to go ahead and put any songs that are in question to a vote.
Yes it did, as was the theme to Quantum of Solace
But no skyfall or anything from the OG era? Surprising
Just had a brief look and it seems like the Once Upon a Time in the West theme nominated in the above post hasn’t been included in the spreadsheet. It’s arguably Morricone’s greatest theme.
Edit: Also, Miles Davis’ Elevator to the Gallows looks to have a dual entry.
This Bond talk reminded me that the greatest Bond movie of all time has a great theme.
I slipped it into the spreadsheet. I can’t tell if nominations have closed. If they have, obviously feel free to zap it.
I’ve gone ahead and deleted the dual entry, and added Once Upon a Time in the West at the bottom for ease of removal.
I thought Live and Let Die was in? The horn riff is used throughout the movie isn’t it?
Also, and this hasn’t been nominated so I won’t put it in the spreadsheet, this seems like a serious omission (I am a Morricone stan):
Ecstasy of Gold:
I mean part of the ambiguity here is that there are definitely other instrumental tracks from the movie score here that aren’t the main credits theme of the movie, including those I’m guilty of nominating. So there’s just a lot of question on exactly what’s eligible. Ecstasy of Gold is excellent and I gladly support it if it’s eligible.
