Jfc multiple states didn’t ‘emerge’, they were imposed by the collapsing foreign colonial power. The British partitions of their colonies on the way out is an epic failure that is still causing war and misery generations later. A perfect example of what doesn’t work. The borders they created in India and Palestine have been at nearly constant war ever since, not to mention the misery of 10s of millions of displaced people. That he considers this at all viable for Ukraine makes me question everything else he says.
English isnt my native language so sometimes its difficult to find the right word. Maybe 2 states were created sounds better.
Oh ok didn’t realize that.
But if Britain didn’t do the partition multiple states certainly would have emerged once the Brits left. The borders would have been different maybe but the atrocities, ethnic cleansing/mass migration would have happened regardless.
That border …

Putin has already failed, badly. The war has already been a complete disaster for Russia, and there is no way they can occupy Ukraine for 20 years or whatever. Even if he takes Donbas and Crimea, that won’t be a picnic. Donbas will be no mans land, and Crimea will be a military state for the fleet and vacationing Russian officials.
If it’s a sign to others, the only sign is that having a lot of nukes will protect you from full scale retaliation from the US and others. This was already known, but it won’t be true forever if states keep depending on it.
Putin kind of got away with exactly this behavior when he took Chechnya, it seems clear he thought he could take over Ukraine in the same fashion and the West wouldn’t kick up a fuss. He misjudged the situation quite badly.
You only get to cry wolf like two, maybe three, times. It’s not a long term strategy.
Putin has all these weird Russian ideas about the decadent west. I mean it’s not that there’s no truth to it (Trump), it’s just what happens in a free society, and there are a lot of strengths in a free society. It’s like he looks at the West and sees all the crazy decadent fish, but he doesn’t understand the water they swim in.
