Yeah the regular tent is fine and easier if you’re just setting up for one night. But the rooftop tent would be nice in places like Europe - where you’re going to find a campground or overlander parking area on the outskirts of a major city - then leave your car there for a few days and explore by public transportation.
The real way to go is get a van you can sleep in. Then you can spend a night in grocery store parking lots and stuff. It’s possible I could rig up my FJ Cruiser to sleep in - but it would take a lot of clever construction.
I’ve been looking at conversions lately, mostly just out of curiosity. It’s much much harder if you’re a large person.
I have too many contacts on there that are indispensable - all the overlander/traveler/expat groups, some local hiking groups - and there are a lot of people I met on my trip who I have no means of contacting other than FB (like say when I come through Mendoza, Argentina).
Also God help me for admitting this - but I like keeping up with old friends and knowing what they’re up to. I actually like seeing their vacation pics and what their kids are up to. If I do see them we have something to talk about. I’m a huge introvert with strangers. But I love my friends and in an ideal world I’d never lose touch with anyone just because they moved to a different city (or different part of LA which is almost the same thing). But I also like keeping up in a passive voyeuristic way, and not have to interact directly if I don’t want to.
IG on the other hand is just pure narcissism and influencer BS. It came out that some beauty influencer charges $10k to endorse a product and $75k to trash a product. Pretty much says it all about IG.
Check out the VanLife hashtag just to see how they ruin overlanding. In all my trips and on the real overlander forums I never saw these people once. Their vans are so immaculate - no way they actually live in those things. I think they stay in hotel rooms and drive out to take selfies - then head back to the clubs to party with their sweet influencer money.
Apply this to basically any industry or hobby IG touches.
Apparently all the real photography forums like 500px have taken a back seat to IG as far as a way for photographers to get their work discovered. Which is terrible because IG max resolution is shit. So it encourages even more gaudy ridiculous photoshopping (which was already pretty bad in the professional landscape photography world) so the images pop at index card size.
God I hate IG so much. I mean people posting vacation pics is fine. It’s just all the BS. Also the square picture thing. Yes you don’t have to anymore. But you still can’t control how people look at it. It’s just a horrible medium for real photography.

Yep - the guy I’ve gone on a bunch of photo tours with is 5’6" - he can sleep comfortably in his FJ w/o any special alterations.
