Why do we care about deadspin? I’d never even heard of it till this week. Was it a big deal and just a blindspot for me?

The point is these guys whole MO (Hitler included) is to come off like a clown and a buffoon until shit gets real, and then it’s too late. They sneak up on you - it’s the only way it works vs. an entrenched power structure.

Part of the ballgame for the right wing movement is muzzling people with nothing to lose. Sites like Deadspin are a huge threat to their usual control of media via money. The most harmful commentary for right-wingers comes from young people with nothing to lose, who almost by definition have no money and a limited platform. People who really bring the heat, i.e. threaten the gravy train, never make it on cable news and they aren’t published in mainstream publications. It is very much in the interest of basically everyone with money to shut them up.

Tom Cotton is actually worth worrying about.
Deadspin was especially dangerous because it drew a mass audience with edgy sports content and therefore was converting politically unaware people. It was like a right-wing nightmare bingo.

I’d love to see how Deadspin could do under a subscription model like The Athletic. Odds would be against it working, but they have a substantial, very devoted following.
