We like to think of Star Trek as high minded philosophy but with so many episodes to fill there’s a lot of “what if everyone got space madness?” or “what if they find a planet where everyone’s hot and horny but they kill you if they touch you?” kind of stuff that’s just fun and has gone away with prestige TV, reduced season lengths, etc.

s3e12 The High Ground
on a planet roiling with terrorist attacks by an oppressed minority, dr crusher is kidnapped while providing medical aid to a bombing victim. the main hamas guy is educated and styles himself as a george washington revolutionary. he wants medical aid and food supplies from the federation and crusher is like, “sure hey look that’s no problem, we’re the good guys we would never ally with a nation that is an obvious stand-in for modern day isreal”. meanwhile aboveground, riker witnesses the everyday injustices of a militarized police state in action.
then up in the sky, the crew is trying to #freethehostage when Data decides to study the military and philosophical principles at play and he objectively concludes that violent terrorism IS effective and justified.
when hamas strikes the enterprise, they take picard as a hostage and bring him underground. they demand the federation start embargoing and blockading the planet. riker, worf and some assorted idf forces infiltrate the underground base and unnecessarily shoot the main hamas guy in the back. riker says, “you didn’t have to kill him” then the enterprise crew just leaves.
