David is peer pressured by his coworkers into confessing his love to maddy. Her fiance is getting annoyed and beats him up a little bit, but he feels bad about it. Well not technically fiance yet, because maddy left him hanging for 36 hours saying she had to think about it.
Agnes takes maddy to the bar to talk out her problems. Agnes knows all the tricks. She picks seats at the bar so they don’t get hit on, and orders 3 double kamikazes in the span of 5 minutes before falling backwards out of her chair.
Maddy goes home and delivers a thoughtful breakup speech to sam, confessing to him that she loves david. But david was the one lying in her bed with the sheets pulled over his head. Sam packed his bags and left his own breakup note
Maddy is upset that she didn’t get to be the breaker-upper, and throws david out. David takes offence and storms out. He calls her a shallow bitch, she calls him a bastard and slaps in the face him twice. A third attempted slap devolves into passionate lovemaking

An heiress falls in love with a bartender, and her rich dad is so against it he cuts her out of his will. Next thing they know, the dad is dead. The heiress comes forward to confess to the murder. The bartender then comes forward to say he did the murder.
The rich dad, meanwhile having faked his death to get the bartender out of his daughter’s life, is moved by the act of true love where these two both put themselves in prison to save the life of the other, and comes to the detective agency to hand over a fake suicide note and evidence that neither of them killed him (he’s still gonna pretend to be dead because he has cancer from smoking and is on his way out soon)
David and maddy have a conversation about their relationship, concluding that they need to maintain unresolved sexual tension or the tv show magic fizzles out. But the episode ends with the two of them banging in a parked car.

maddy and david’s relationship is semisecret, with them acting at work the same as they always have, but banging every night. maddy is upset that it’s not a real relationship. david is down for whatever maddy wants, but the problem is maddy doesn’t know what she wants from david. she’s overall feeling stressed and sad, and both of them try to figure out their relationship through agnes, because she knows their deal and she’s the only other female character on the show with lines.
they get into a shouting fight in work, and david says the only way to resolve the tension she’s feeling is for them to formally announce to their coworkers that they’re fucking. maddy is very strongly against this course of action, and follows him out into the main office hall begging him to not do this. he winds up for a big announcement and just says that he’s fallen in love with maddy. maddy’s heart melts but she still leaves the office without returning the sentiment.
that night, she’s visited by the apparition of dr joyce brothers, who gives her relationship advice. after a round of direct questioning, it comes out that the only thing maddy knows for sure is she enjoys fucking david. jorce brothers declares no problem found and the mirror she appeared in shatters
in a parallel apparition, ray charles visits david to give him relationship advice. david puts on a cringey black accent while he talks to him, i can’t believe it.
Maddy ends up agreeing to start over, and david takes her on their first date to an all-night laundromat. They decide to not do the relationship thing and the final scene is maddy on a plane alone looking unupset
