But San Francisco-based X says in its complaint filed in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas, that Media Matters “knowingly and maliciously” portrayed ads next to hateful material “as if they were what typical X users experience on the platform.”
But why would a San Francisco based company file in Ft Worth? Humm…

The lawsuit is laughably bad. One of the big points is that MediaMatters refreshed their feed to see tons of ads - but it was only 13-15x more than an average user. That’s not that much (I’m guessing most users browse pretty slowly) and moreover, what any good researcher would do. The fact that only 1 in 13 to 15 accounts would see Nazi-adjacent ads is still pretty bad.
edit: All Media Matters did was (1) use an account that was older that 30 days; (2) followed “only” 30 accounts consisting of RWNJ and big advertisers; and (3) scrolled through their feed quickly to see more posts and ads. This was all that was needed to defeat X’s “multiple safeguards.”
Edit2: the lawsuit also makes a big deal that what MediaMatters posted screenshots of represented only like 5 out of billions of impressions served by Twitter. But that’s just those exact pairings of the specific post and the specific ad are rare. Plenty of other users are now showing how easy it is to get ads next to offensive twitters posts (not shocking of course).
