I came very close to buying a Tesla last year. It’s maybe my best one out ever that I didn’t. Would be embarrassed to drive that car today.

You don’t get to put that sticker on a model Y. Musk had done both his securities fraud 420 secured tweet and his “pedo guy” accusation before that car even existed.

Eh, I think it’s still fair. Most people were probably unaware of the extent of Elon’s weirdness until he started his Twitter purchase in 2022. I don’t think “how fucking crazy is the CEO?” is really a thing most car buyers look into.

I think there were pretty clearly 4 stages of Elon:
Before/Up through 2014-15ish, generational tech genius: Most people wouldn’t recognize the name. Those that do recognize him from producing the radically new model S, probably the first full EV that you’d actually want to drive, or expanding access to affordable solar power with Solar City, or the ambitious Space X. He’s heading technological breakthroughs on multiple fronts and there’s little evidence to suggest he doesn’t deserve the credit for all of it.
2016-17, carnival barker: Anyone paying close attention to his business practices, finances, and engineering decisions realizes his true skill is attracting investors because his companies incinerate cash, his engineering breakthroughs are helped largely by ignoring the cost factor even while skimping on quality control, and you can expect all his promises to be late and underdeliver.
2018-2022, internet shitposter: he finds a new fanbase in Rogan bros, turns sharply libertarian in his politics (despite surviving on massive government subsidies), and cranks up the edgelord memes on Twitter. If you’re still taking him seriously at this stage you’re either entirely disconnected from Elon news or getting your news from right wing sources.
2022-current, fascist threat to democracy: purchased Twitter and turned it into a safe space for Nazis.
We have an Elon 2.0 thread started in 2020 that’s almost entirely negative towards him. I don’t know where the Elon 1.0 thread is but I can’t imagine it’s much kinder. So the information was out there. And the association of Musk with Tesla has always been much stronger than Toyota and whoever the CEO of Toyota is. So if you’re posting that sticker on a model Y you’re at best advertising to the world that you were late to the party. It would be more understandable (but less amusing) to say “I knew Elon was a piece of shit but I really like the supercharger network.”
