Editing Dahl and others

What are people even arguing about now that they’re not pulling the original versions?

We have created the concept of intellectual property, giving a copyright holder control over how a work of art is used. The right to distribute and adapt a work belongs to the copyright holder, whether or not it is the original creator, and those rights don’t change. If Dahl could change his works during his lifetime, then whoever holds those rights should be allowed to do the same thing after his death. It may be bad art to do so, it may be immoral to do so, but not everything that is wrong should be illegal.

That the law permits the Roald remix edition doesn’t mean the law encourages his heirs to do so. If we say they can’t, then does that mean we can ban race- or gender-swapping characters in TV or film adaptations? We are better off with government not trying to enforce matters of taste.

I support more censorship of this tedious discussion.

Your cutting commentary cannot overwhelm my warm red wine buzz.

Well some people care about or are interested in this conversation. Maybe it should be moved to its own thread, that would be fine, you can PM a mod and ask them to do that. But your post is basically telling people having a conversation to shut the fuck up.

This is very fair, I thought it would be more obvious that I was not registering a serious complaint. This discussion has kind of taken over the LC thread though so I would invite a mod (whoever that may be) to isolate it.

Sorry my reply was a little sharp, that sort of thing bothers me though and maybe I’m oversensitive to it. I just poured my first scotch of the afternoon so soon I’ll be right there with you.

Constance Garnett almost single-handedly helped to turn off generations of readers to Russian literature by writing in a flat, dry, and according to David Foster Wallace, “excruciatingly Victorianish” style.

No hard feelings, it’s actually somewhat amusing that I am being accuses of silencing the censorship discussion.

The same thing we were arguing about before? Are they not still publishing altered versions of the text?

I don’t have a ton of interest in this discussion, but it seems like one worthy of having. And it has gotten long enough that having its own thread seems optimal. However, if that’s a lot of work, then I’m not really all that bothered by just keeping it here.

I don’t think there are mods anymore. Let’s keep the good times going and use our scroll wheels instead.
