Douchebag 2.0—an Elon Musk company

One of the most important ways to limit carbon is electrification of the transport system. Even a coal-powered electric car emits like half as much carbon as a gas powered one. I’m not trying to pass Musk off as “The Worlds Raddest Man” as some posters in this forum have (embarrassingly), but Tesla has promoted electrification and built more electric vehicles than anyone else.

BYD has probably passed them.

(But generally agree, Tesla has been very important for electric cars.)

There are 2 separate issues here: when are they expensed and, when they are, what are they called?

I would expect the timing issue to be straightforward, and that they’d be expensed in the period that the employees earned their salaries (as opposed to being capitalized like inventory purchases and only expensed at some later date).

As far as where they would show up on the Income Statement, that’s less clear. My guess would be in R&D and not in Cost of Goods Sold, based on how they describe their Cost of Revenues in their most recent 10-K. That being said, firms are sometimes weird about putting things in their COGS that you wouldn’t expect them to. For example, Tesla appears to put their warranty expense in Cost of Revenues, which seems extremely weird to me.

Cars are bad period

I understand that most of my shots at Elon are based in some combination of jealousy and frustration at my own faults, but he’s truly a moron if he’s intentionally exposing the staff at his companies. It was a plot point in Apollo 13!

If Tesla’s share price growth continues, Musk could net a bonus deal worth a record $55.8bn. To trigger the maximum payout he has to build Tesla into a $650bn company by 2028.
