My sonâs (heâs 15) high school jazz band performed at a local food festival over the weekend. Along with the different restaurants, local businesses also had booths. Among them were the county Democrats and Republicans.
The Republicans had a cardboard cutout of Trump with a MAGA hat, so of course my kid had to take a pic with it (ironically, thank you). Among other shit, they had shirts with Trumpâs mugshot that read âWANTED - TRUMP 2024.â
Before we left, my son went up to the booth and asked them if he could have one of those shirts. They said heâd need to donate at least $10.
He said, âWell, then youâve lost my vote,â and walked away.

Because I recently read Perlsteinâs Nixonland (mainly covering Nixon until '72) and am now reading The Invisible Bridge (covering the fall of Nixon and Rise of Regan), a lot of things are looking like Nixon to me at the moment.
Itâs pretty shocking to see how similar Trump and Nixon are (with major differences as wellâNixon usually played to the center with grand, aspirational language and then aggressively did the opposite behind the scenes). Nixon would always do whatever he thought would advance his interests, as amorally as possible. Itâs stunning to see how much of his presidency was devoted to strategic politics and ratfucking instead of strategic policy. His whitehouse staff was noteworthy for the number of yes-men.
Iâm not going to write an essay here, but itâs surprising that Trump hasnât been more commonly viewed as âdumb Nixon,â because thatâs what he seems like to me. Both ultimately liked to play the role of head of a criminal organization, even when they were president. Both were tapers who always came off badly when taped.
I mostly grew out of Hunter Thompson after my teens, but he had Nixon pegged, and I wish he could have covered Trump, because he would have had Trump pegged as well. Anyway, I think we need more discussion of Trump as dumb Nixon and Trumpers as similar to Nixon dead-enders, which was around 30% of the country.
By the way, even though I know more 60s history than most, I never realized the extent to which Watergate wasnât so much about the break-in, but that every time more information came out about Nixon and his shenanigans it made him look worse, often contradicting public pronouncements, etc. He basically came across as a lying criminal when that wasnât an acceptable thing in politics.
