Does the manner of death have anything to do with that? I’m not saying it’s a good look, but if any veteran has that option when regardless of how they die it isn’t much of a story.

No. I just googled for one of Putin’s “opponents”. My only point was that democracy in the USA is as dead as it is in Russia.

Damn, you really got my hopes up. For a second I was wondering how hard this guy trolled Putin and how he hadn’t managed to fall out of a window yet.
He was openly critical. The government claimed there were problems with his candidacy and removed him from ballots. He was some kind of official in Moscow and resigned, publicly saying he was not coerced. So, he was pretty clearly coerced.
Have they tried writing a strongly worded letter?

If Trump is allowed to run again then he has a 100% chance of remaining in power. At that point, there is no reason to even have an election.
