Democratic Primary Debates

Yup. But he should phrase it, how are we going to pay for our current system which will cost more.

Only debate Iā€™ve missed so far. Was it really the worst one, or is the reaction here a bit of recency bias?

Warren is good but the best was Kamala Harrisā€¦

He really did, he had some great moments in the debates.

This sounds crazy to say but fuck it . I feel like for the first time I can kinda understand how Trump supporters got to where they are. The media is complete shit, the establishment is corrupt as fuck. Now obviously their solution is fucking awful and they picked the most dishonest corrupt person in political history that is making those problems exponentially worse.

Iā€™m just saying I can kinda understand how they got there. Regular people can see the media and establishment is completely fucking this country up. Finally someone comes along on the Republican side and calls it out, makes you feel proud again to be racist and xenophobic, owns the libs which you hate more than anything in this world, and boom you have yourself a cult leader.

In before radical centrists say see I told you Bernie supporters are trump supporters!

And yeah the people saying Bernie can steal some people who voted Trump last go round are probably correct. There definitely has to be some people who hate the establishment, the media, the political elite, but are smart enough to realize that their lives arenā€™t getting any better under Trump and none of his policies actually benefit them. The people who voted Trump not because they loved the racism, but because they hated Hillary and the machine.

Bernie pulls in those people, massive youth turnout and fucking waffle crushes in 2020.

Lets do this boys.

I mean I get where the Trump supporters are coming from too tbh. They wanted to lob a grenade at the Washington establishment who fucked them over. In a lot of ways he got the job done. The GOP establishment politicians have now been utterly humiliated and the liberals are incredibly unhappy. If what you wanted was to send a thug to go break some peopleā€™s legs itā€™s hard to see the Trump presidency as anything other than an exercise in wish fulfillment.

TBH I donā€™t actually expect Bernie to be all that effective (unless he wins really big which we are drawing live to in fairness), which is why he isnā€™t who I would have chosen to be the next POTUSā€¦ but mother fuck any of the establishment people being a better option. Sometimes what you want is for someone to get in there and fuck some shit upā€¦ particularly when that shit is an incredibly nepotistic political machine that is busy selling your future for pennies on the dollar.

It was actually the worst

Yeah and it wasnā€™t super close. This debate was really awful.

Yea Warren would be more effective for sure. But I prefer Bernie now because he isnā€™t gonna compromise with the DNC a lot. Itā€™s clear we need a full scale shift to the left and a massive restructuring, we need to inspire a ton of young progressive talent to run, we need to stop putting our finger on the scales of primaries for establishment types etc.

Warren could get a lot of good but probably temporary stuff done, Bernie could change politics for the rest of our lives.

Yeah the party rebuild is what Iā€™m in it for too. Any policy gains are tertiary to that. In that way I guess weā€™re exactly like Trump voters. They wanted the GOP to actually represent them, not just scam them into voting for them. I too would like my party to actually represent me rather than just scam me into voting for them.

Donald Trump is the President of the United States for a reason. Itā€™s very obvious (particularly four years in) that he wasnā€™t most of the things he claimed to be, but he got elected because of deep resentment of party leadership by rank and file members. Its looking increasingly likely that the Dems are in for the same kind of reckoning, and despite there being legitimate comparisons to be made with Trumpism Iā€™m totally unbothered by that.

If populism means looking out for the interests of more than big campaign donors and the special interest groups they represent I say bring on the populism. Ordinary people who arenā€™t members of our countries proto aristocracy deserve at minimum the meritocracy they promised us. Nothing in my personal experiences suggests that we have anything close to that. What we have instead is a bloated and failing quasi official aristocracy that thinks itā€™s own interests = the good of the country.

No one better represents that reality than the current occupant of the WH. If we lived in a meritocracy his inheritance would have been taxed at 90% and he would have first been poor (after losing the remaining 10% trying to martingale himself back to being super rich) and then probably been incarcerated when he did crimes to try to get back to rich again. Instead heā€™s the fucking president.

I just think you guys need a clarifying moment. We had one over here, the UK is too small c conservative and too in thrall to traditional media. We will fade into irrelevancy and mediocrity and the world will probably breathe a sigh of relief. We need to know now if the USA is a place where a left wing, bottom up, people power movement can succeed electorally. If it canā€™t then itā€™s gg and we should just abandon hope make a plan to live the 20 more years or so we have left and try to enjoy life while it lasts. If it can then thatā€™s something to build on. The centrists argue we shouldnā€™t test the people in case they fail us but if theyā€™re going to fail us itā€™s useful to know now.

NY Times has its winners and losers of the debate up, letā€™s see who can guess who Bret Stephens is talking about with this 8 out of 10 rating:

(8/10) ā€” Consistently defeats all my attempts to find fault with him.

I just learned that the next debate will be in Phoenix on March 15. If anybody knows how I can get on Bloombergā€™s payroll for this event, let me know.
