Yes, the progressive movement has always been about class struggle. If you are deeply offended by his reference to slavery, just substitute involuntary servitude. Political rhetoric is typically utilized to make a point more vibrant and understandable, not to be taken literally.

Bern’s remarks were obviously in poor taste, but the larger point vis-a-vis service industry workers was in the right place. I don’t see how too many people get up in arms over something like this from 300 years ago.

It’s maybe effective rhetoric, it is inaccurate though.
I thought one of Bernie’s selling points is that his beliefs haven’t changed over the decades. Until he says otherwise, I assume he still believes everything he said back then. And he’s not necessarily wrong.
