Democratic Primaries 2020 - Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Yes?

Yes that post was clearly praising LBJ. Do you have Biden brain or what?

The racist part is at a minimum nuanced - he (Johnson) was a complicated guy. The warmongering - yep. For different reasons, he and Nixon are two of the most tragic figures in American history/politics - consumed by Vietnam but could never manage to get away from it, and it destroyed them both.

LBJ was pretty much of a scumbag but for all his faults he understood the point of accumulating political power is to use it. This is obvious to most but has been lost on the Democratic Party for my entire life.

lol. It might have been easier to understand if tabbakers retweet thingy had said MLK bros. Not sure why we’re talking LBJ instead of MLK.
I’m not sure what Viridian is smoking.

Are we all drunk or is it just me… I thought I understood it.

That’s my point.he was a complicated person, as are the overwhelming majority of politicians. But he accomplished some monumental legislative victories that were among the most important leftist accomplishments in our country’s history by forming alliances and being pragmatic. Crunchy Black et al invoke the Civil Rights movement and LBJ to take a smug swipe at “liberals.” Yet Elizabeth Warren is much closer to LBJ in her approach to politics than Bernie. Yet they think Warren is evil because of it. hence the irony, if it were up to Crunchy Black in picking what candidate to support to get all the historic Civil Rights legislation passed, he would have shit all over LBJ.

You and I have very different interpretations of that tweet. Let’s agree to disagree.

Claiming there is no difference between George Wallace and LBJ seems likes something Bernie twitter 1964 would say.

We don’t know what Bernie would do with political power, though. He’s proven he’s unable to accumulate any. In thirty years in Congress Bernie Sanders’ biggest legislative achievement is naming a post office. Yet that doesn’t stop some people here from sanctimoniously talking shit about people and politicians who actually realize that you have to accumulate the power first and blaming the amorphous “establishment” for Bernie’s continual political failures. It’s pretty easy for Crunchy Black or whoever to shit on the ACA for not being M4A or having a public option, but, uh, Bernie ain’t producing results, so maybe you should have a little more humility when it comes to judging others who want to take a different approach.

This seems worth repeating right about now

Anyway, I promise I’m done arguing with y’all. I like you all and I support pulling as far to the left as we can. I get annoyed, though, with some of the hot takes about “the establishment” y’all subscribe to.

Common sense would tell you if Bernie had done nothing but name a post office, he wouldn’t be in Congress for, what, 30 years? Someone would have ran against him on him doing nothing and probably would have won.

LBJ was a racist shithead and I have no idea why you brought him up in response to that tweet. Is your point that shitty politicians can pass good legislation?

He had a big cock though :+1:

So changing the subject a bit here, let’s talk VP choice (for both guys). Who should Bernie pick? Who should Biden pick?

I have a top two, and oddly enough, they are actually the same for both of them. And they are not the picks everyone is chattering about, either.

  1. Val Demings. For Bernie, helps with demographics where he’s weak. For Biden, she’s young and energetic enough to counter the “sleepy” narrative. Still has great optics and press left over from her work on the impeachment trial, and she’s well-liked.

  2. Michele Lujan Grisham. For Biden, helps with demographics where he’s weak. For Bernie, slightly more moderate but still a fighter, and someone who knows the health care industry well (NM secretary of Health before she ran for congress). She also has both legislative experience in the House and executive experience as the Governor of NM. (I’m actually really in love with the idea of her being VP, she’s my top choice for either Biden or Bernie)

So…who you got?

LBJ is good because thanks to LBJ we have solved all the race issues in this country. No criticism to be leveled here. (/s)

It seems strange that so few people are able to contemplate alternate realities. If LBJ doesn’t pass civil rights, does that mean it doesn’t happen? No. It happened despite LBJ, not because of him.

In the same way, if Warren magically becomes president and is able to bolster the ACA, do we have her to thank for universal healthcare? No. It will happen because of a movement of the people, not because of her. And politicians like her (and Pete) are actually holding things back, not advancing them forward. Just like LBJ, we only thank them for being in the right place at the right time.

It’s the fighters like MLK that deserve the actual appreciation for moving the public discourse, not the politicians that succumbed to the will of the people despite fighting against that will for years.

I propose pushup contest.

Shocker, the Biden campaign is throwing out a bunch of half-assed bullshit about the discussions.
