I’ve assumed that the change in sentiment was primarily the platforms getting betting at culling troll farms and bots. That probably has a positive feedback loop on real posters tho.
This made me feel better today:

update for 2022: FB caught on about late 2020ish and it’s funny reading these comments now because the language used here I could never get away with anymore.
at some point I believe your account gets flagged for more aggressive moderation. I caught a 90 day for telling my cousin jokingly “i’ll fight u” over disagreement over a popular television show.
i figured out the moderation bots will mellow out if you can drive positive engagement for a while, so to balance my range I participate in groups and farm viral comments that generate a lot of likes and hearts. if you want to still troll these platforms that’s the only way to survive anymore.
IG is moderated less intensely but it’s starting to get that way as well.
troll the algorithm, friends, that’s where the fight is these days.

if you want a viral comment, it’s surprisingly easy, just respond within the first two minutes, preferably within the first few seconds, with the first obvious thing that pops in your head. if you can make it even slightly funny it will blow up
