Defend Billionaires Like Bill Gates and Offend Centrist Whiners Who Love Money

So is your argument that Gates is just a genius and not a super genius? Jesus christ who cares. Gates is obviously an intelligent guy, what even is this argument about?

It occurs to me that you are hating the player when you should, in fact, be hating the game.

Grunching but I assumed almost everybody here aced the SAT and/or ACT.

Not knowing microbet’s argument I’m gonna soft cosign it because I like playing fast and loose.

And now I feel like a total asshole for going hard at bigt2k4. My frame of reference was all thrown off.

I don’t pretend to or aspire to be mr. Objectivity here. A couple of the posts before me seemed kind of hero worshipping of gates and I don’t like that. I think he gets way more credit for things than he deserves. So, I like to point out that nothing he has done is really that impressive. Sure he proved that he was fairly smart before he was 19 or so and since then he copied some software and has been ruthless and lucky in business.

I forget what it was but I read something that went over the history of lotus and Excel and how Microsoft was really into pretending like they are going to buy a company while they just make a copy of the software.

The real argument is some people think taxing Gates is enough while other true Patriots want to literally take his money from him.

The thing about that is, all things of that class - the fake moon landing, the crisis actor stuff, Flat Earth stuff - it’s irritating to acknowledge, but all of those come from very smart people. Dumb people do not sit down and start thinking about ways that various popular proofs that the Earth is round might be flawed. Or if they do, they don’t get anywhere - because they’re dumb. Smart people have a capacity to stake out and defend flawed positions that dumb people simply don’t.

Chris Langan is the stock example of this. He’s got the highest, or one of the highest, recorded IQs in history and he thinks the book of Genesis is a solid starting point for investigating the beginning of the universe. I once saw someone compare him to a supercomputer running nothing but malware. I think it’s a very apt comparison.

Probably not in the top 10 worst things Gates has done. Forcing out his best friend and trying to steal his shares because he got cancer is his #1 publicly known sociopathic act, imo.

But who knows what he has been able to keep private… Maybe he is the one who killed Jeffrey Epstein?

Verging on a derail (or maybe not… maybe it’s the heart of all this) but Langan is sort of a fraud. I mean, he’s a very sharp dude but the over 9000 IQ stuff is fabricated nonsense.

There’s a fair case to be made that IQ generally is kinda BS, so sure.

Langan is a great example and also Marilyn vos Savant w.r.t. Fermat’s last theorem. Malware analogy may be on point if he has severe cognitive biases or personality disorder. The other possibility is a great machine-learning algorithm but only bad/insufficient data to train it with. I think that’s definitely apropos in vos Savant’s case. She confirmed it by very carefully thinking about it. Unfortunately, she was shown to be laughably wrong almost immediately by actual experts in the field drawing upon millions of hours of research and experience.

No, I mean specifically him specifically extrapolating incorrectly an IQ from those weird megatitan tests and then specifically going on a publicity tour to promote himself.

One of the people who scored higher on those tests said that even if you accept raw intelligence as a single measurable trait, those tests are like hyperextreme trivia quizzes and not intelligence tests. And people know Langan’s name and not his because he didn’t go on shows saying he’s The Smartest Dude Ever.

Fair enough.

You gotta feel for her with that name, though. Pressure!

And that’s the trap! You know who needs to shop at places like Walmart? People with jobs working at places like Walmart!

I rarely go into a Walmart, let alone buy food there. But I happened to be with this girl a couple of weeks ago who shops there and wanted to stop for groceries. I noticed this package of rice and pasta I normally buy at my local store (not a fine foods place). They were $.99 per pack whereas the place I go, they sell for $1.59. So you can buy 3 packages at Walmart for less than it costs to buy 2 at most local grocery chains. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about spending the extra $.59, but I can definitely see how that savings sure would come in handy for a family of four

It’s a rigged system. They quashed competitors with low prices and cheap labor and now my guess is that their employees probably represent a sizable proportion of their customer base. If not, then people who work similar jobs. Their long term goal is to make all of us their fucking slaves if we let them!
