COVID-19: Chapter 9 - OMGicron

I bet they could boost ratings of all their shows by just adding an exclamation point. I think they did a Seinfeld proving this didn’t they?

Tucker!
Ingramham!
Remember When I Was A V-Jay On MTV!

That last one was a question but who cares? We’re about exclamation points now!

weren’t colbert/meyers off in august? or rather, they were off for the olympics and came back a week later?

btw first recommended article after the gutfield crap piece:

Yeah, I think part of the calculation too is being in Australia instead of being in Florida. In the former, you have a decent chance to get down to zero cases, but not in Florida. I don’t think taking major measures in response to a relatively big outbreak is unreasonable. If they’re having to do this every month, then they’ll have to rethink things.

Seems like it ought to. idk how common that is.

Actually having measurable levels of virus in your nose and not being “infected” isn’t really a real thing at the cellular level. That infection might be quickly cleared by your immune system and asymptomatic, but vaccination doesn’t prevent any part of the process of the virus’s spike protein binding to ACE2 on your cells and proceeding to infect them. Instead, it helps your immune cells kill infected cells and coat the viruses in antibodies so they can be recognized and eaten by other cells. If there are measurable levels of virus, it’s pretty likely that at least one cell is going to get infected, even if it doesn’t last long.

But of course, there are also just false positive tests, so a test can certainly come back positive without you having an infection.

How much DNA do you need for it to be detectable? Ain’t that the whole point of doing PCR?

RNA in this case, but the amount of cycles (each pcr cycle doubles the signal) is proportional to amount of RNA present. I would make the assumption that environmental RNA is not sufficient to give a signal, there has to be active replication in the samples tissue.

As others have said, the initial infiltration is probably not impacted much by the immune system, but prevents it from getting much further and once fully activitated, clears it out of the nose much faster.

I’m not sure it’s really known exactly how little DNA is the minimum for detection, but by the time you’re doing 40+ rounds of amplification, the chances that whatever got amplified isn’t actually from the virus start to get pretty decent, but something that tests positive after 30 rounds is usually true. So, if we assume perfect amplification (a poor assumption, but it would give us a floor) 2^40 is about 10^12, and 2^30 is about 10^10, so something like 100 viruses barest minimum for accurate detection, and given the imperfections of PCR, it’s likely a number a fair bit higher.

Have a distant friend that recently caught covid. He’s been very anti-vax from the beginning but he didn’t have any issues running out to get the antibody treatment, which is still under EUA.

Still is posting anti-vax bullshit. He’s on day 6 and says he’s getting better, but we know that many people end up dying after feeling better after a week. I’ll keep a lookout and update on how he’s doing.

Just seems crazy illogical that these people can run out and get the antibodies without any issue but getting the vaccine is just a step too far.

Brain rot.

But what if it turns out Delta + vaccinated is basically the common cold - which probably isn’t that far off for college students? Why shut everything down because of an outbreak?

They’re fine with all types of snake oil. I just don’t get it either. I have noticed that there aren’t many genuinely smart people who are ardently anti-vax.

Not all landlords?

I’ve said many times on here. Gutfield is fucking dangerous. Dude always has the perfect perfect spin for deplorables to immediately ease any cognitive dissonance and steer them where he wants. I can’t even watch a minute of his show or I’ll be thinking about it for months if not years. It’s so insidious.

I watched like 1 minute after the election to see how they were spinning it: “Obviously this vote by mail stuff just has to go. That is known enough for us to guffaw at.”

I’m not describing it well. But it was so slick. Ugh.

I’ve also seen him just effortlessly deflect stuff about Trump’s character with “sometimes you need a cad”, and again it was just perfectly done. Cad is the perfect word to diminish and trivialize Trump’s dangerous pyschopathy.

Surely a good swabbing might grab >100 virus particles if you have some in your nose hairs?

He got the first Pfizer shot yesterday. Having side effects, which is consistent with his having had COVID already. I just sent him

I’m sorry that you’re feeling crappy,
But otherwise I’m very happy.
