—Vaccine efficacy is wearing off after six months, both for preventing transmission and severe illness. Still offer protection, but breakthroughs aren’t rare at all and he is seeing increased vaccinated people in the ICU (related an anecdote where vaccinated colleague gave vaccinated father COVID, father now vented)
—-he’s seeing a surge of severe illness among healthcare workers that were the first to take the vaccine. Expects widespread healthcare worker shortages. Big part of the booster announcement today.
—-seeing plenty of evidence of transmission in outdoor settings, particularly when crowded but also in fleeting situations. “Seeing things we don’t see from measles”
—-only solution in the near term is n95 fitted properly and distancing, indoors and out.
—-Next few months “really the perfect storm”, once schools are all open. Expects will be the worst of the pandemic so far throughout the US (high and low vaxxed areas)
—-has no idea what the exit ramp is. Vaccines are part of the answer and definitely reduce death, but herd immunity is not a thing and these waves are likely to continue indefinitely for now. “Stay tuned, we need to learn more”

Jesus this is so incredibly bleak and depressing.
The country is just done. Even responsible types are completely out of patience for this. We’re just gonna let it rip at the worst possible time.
Just his takes based on his role, CDC contacts, what he is seeing in the data at U Minnesota, his research etc.
Again, he’s been a pessimist before, was too pessimistic about alpha, but he also was in the schools can open safely with real precautions and low community spread camp last year so he’s not all gloom and doom. His vaccine info/take admittedly has me shook.
Says Minnesota has zero pediatric ICU capacity and a big accelerator has been early vaxxed nurses getting breakthrough cases in large numbers (at least large enough that bring out for two weeks causing real staffing problems) some severe with hospitalization/ICU
I hope to hell hes wrong, and again he is 100% a pessimist and has been throughout COVID and was way wrong about alpha. But I wanted to pass along, in particular in case people wanted to start harassing schools about precautions before opening.
