I think the point about Vietnam is great. People smoke a lot less in Cali because of social pressures that I think came about in part because of PSAs. People litter a LOT less because of PSAs. The government could have done more of that, more consistently, without the counter OFB arguments coming from government and that is all caused by the same businesses that said it’s safe to go back into the water in Jaws.
But, I wouldn’t vote for any restrictions that I’m not doing. I’m not the most strict around here either, but I think if everyone did what I did R would be well under 1 and that’s good enough for me at least as far as what I’d try to force everyone else to do.
I don’t think this is true at all. there have been tons of business models that “work” with the inclusion of labor, there’s nothing magical about uber/instacart whatever that make them different in this regard.
the business model only works if you either A) keep getting cash infusions from dumb investors forever OR B) raise prices
I do curbside pickup for Sams Club, Walmart and Target.
They are all done in house by the employees and don’t raise the prices. Wtf does that have to do with a “gig” economy? How is it different if a salaried employee is collecting my groceries versus whatever else they would otherwise be doing?
Pretty much opposite of the “freedom” ideal. In the extreme, this logic goes to totalitarianism.
But lol most humans. We can do anything measured. Pure capitalism is evil but pure socialism is as well. If only we can have a system where there is incentive to achieve but not by exploiting others.
even then I’m not sure it’s a good calculation. the instacart shopper can be doing three or four orders at the same time, and while the instacart person will spend might spend more time in the store than a regular shopper he’s probably in there less on a per-item/capita/whatever basis (only has to stand in line one time, only goes down each aisle once etc.
it’s probably not a huge improvement but it should be noticable unless I’m missing something
Seems like having everyone switch to curbside would be massively safer, although I don’t know if that really works unless you can convince ~all the shoppers to switch. Esp if we put the grocery employees at the front of the line for vaccines.
Someone needs to create a salesman problem-style app that lets the Instacart guys maximize efficiency when they’re running down the aisles getting items for multiple orders.
A is where we are now, so yeah agreed there is also that option. Uber is paying the drivers close zero after depreciation of vehicles today and has surge pricing I’m not sure it works. Their investor presentations are pretty open that this is a land grab and the future and real play is in self-driving vehicles. I’m not as certain about DoorDash and Instacart, but am pretty skeptical about Instacart working given the history of that business.
Organic Girl is probably/definitely the best brand, it comes in a clamshell. Downside is that only a few stores carry the larger size, and it’s expensive. But the large container of Organic Girl Super Greens is my jam.
Kroger brand kale at Ralph’s is a major staple for me. Still needs to be inspected, but kale is so much hardier than regular greens that it’s usually pretty good.
I think it has more to do with the store than the brand. There’s a Vons near me where I don’t even bother checking the produce, it’s always crap. Whole Foods seems to do a great job preserving produce, as does the Ralphs near me (although I’ve been to other Ralphs that suck).
Time of day and the amount of people they are exposed to. If i shop at eleven thirty at night and someone is shopping for me at peek hours there would be more people coming into contact with each other with the instacart shopper.
Definitely sucked as a single guy. Normally I’d be out in the desert freezing my balls off on acid having the time of my life or in a warehouse with the coolest people I know dancing my ass off, having great conversations, and maybe having some intimate company.
That said I made the best of it and it wasn’t too bad.
