A new coronavirus strain that was first detected in the UK has been retrospectively found in an older man who died of the disease in Germany last month, health authorities say.
A laboratory at Berlin’s Charité hospital confirmed the MHH’s initial findings.
Apart from the patient’s daughter and wife, who recovered, there were no further infections in connection with this case, the ministry said.
“The patient’s daughter had been in England in mid-November and was most likely infected with the virus there,” the ministry said.
The new coronavirus variant is thought to be more infectious than other strains. However, early analysis suggests the strain does not induce more severe symptoms.
Meanwhile, Switzerland became the latest country to identify cases of new coronavirus strains from both the UK and South Africa.
Rusher comes ‘clean’ and is now Russia#3 in terms of deaths
Russia’s deputy prime minister has revealed more than 80% of excess deaths this year are linked to Covid-19, which would mean its death toll is three times higher than previously reported.
Excess deaths are the difference between the total number of deaths registered and the average over the previous years for the same period.
Official figures say 55,827 people have died with Covid-19 in Russia.
The deputy prime minister said excess deaths would take that to 186,000.
I agree with most everything in your post, but I do think that the private sector is going to make their money on this one way or another. I imagine it will parallel the existing structure from flu shots, which pretty much all the big chain pharmacies do now (I think).
For example, I got my flu shot for “free” (insurance billed) from Safeway this year. They even gave me a 10% off my grocery order coupon with my shot. I’m sure they wouldn’t do that if they thought they’d lose money on the deal. Who knows, the flu shot might even function as a loss leader if it can get people in the stores loading up their carts.
Also, got a link to this emailed to me today. It looks like they’ll be able to collect an “administration fee” from insurance companies or the feds, and it seems like they’ll be on the ball when the vaccines arrive, along with corresponding guidance from the feds and state health authorities. Includes a decent vaccine FAQ to boot.
Churchill, that’s stupid. There’s a complete lack of basic social distancing measures and has been for months. Variants are not the only variable here.
I mean he’s getting a TON of heat for what he’s already doing without stimulus. I agree he should shut shit down, but without stimulus it is super tough. I know a ton of non political people who were furious because they lost jobs because of covid, had to get other jobs because no stimulus, then those jobs got shut down. Hair dressers, people in restaurants etc.
Like yeah he should do it, and I think he will now that stimulus passed, but it was a horrible spot because our federal government failed us so badly.
The restaurant was open, wasn’t it? Or did he make the owners open the joint just for him and make all the kitchen and wait staff break quarantine bc he was jonesing for duck liver pâté?
I’m a psychologist in NH and I still see 1/3 of my patients in my office (with masks, air purifier running, and sitting 8-10 feet apart).
A colleague who is a nurse in our practice sent the rest of us the link created by the State of NH to sign up for the vaccine. Although it’s too soon to get a response, it appears from the information posted that I might be in the wave after they’ve vaccinated first responders and hospital employees.
Edit: As soon as I finished this post I saw this in my email:
Doesn’t matter. The optics of it are shit when you’re telling your constituents to be proactive about not doing unnecessary things while you’re going to a restaurant.
I didn’t realize (although I guess it isn’t that surprising) that standard pharmacies have been distributing/administering some of the Phase 1 vaccinationions. Apparently, one store had a few doses that were going to expire (they had been kept at higher than deep freeze temps), so they just gave them out to randos. Glad they didn’t go to waste, but it’s a bit concerning that they didn’t get to Phase 1 people since I doubt we’re anywhere close to full coverage for that group.
This is what should have been done in the first place, but at this point the horse has left the barn. They fucked up the messaging so badly that it’s easy to ignore them if that’s what you want to do. Many cities and some entire counties are in “fuck you” mode. All the sheriffs have refused to enforce any of it. Tons of people, obviously, don’t give a shit.
Yeah, unfortunately I think him being caught as a hypocrite is driving his cowardice about shutting things down.
That and the fact that his local PDs and Sherrifs have told him they wont enforce the law. Not a whole lot he can do as Governor to both implement the shutdown and be able to enforce it. That takes an entire team
Aside from (most) restaurants in Placer county not having in restaurant service currently, absolutely nothing else has changed since the most recent measures have been implemented. I drove past the Roseville mall on 12/22 and if that place was at less than 20% capacity I would eat the hat of everybody on this forum.
