It’s all going to hell in the Czech Republic. Our hospitals are so flooded that covid patients are being sent to Germany and Switzerland.
It’s easy to lose perspective, but we’ve never developed a vaccine this quickly in history before. We’ve never tracked variants in real-time. The technology being deployed is pretty amazing.

Yea I was trying to think what it would have been like when I was my kid’s age in the 80’s. We couldn’t sequence the DNA and develop this shit so fast. So can’t imagine us getting Vaccines up and running.
On the other hand, No Trump and Fox News etc not running like they are now and no social media to spread disinfo so easily, so maybe we don’t act so fucking stupid and actually stop the spread so much better.

Yeah, the derposphere disinformation bubble is the single biggest thing keeping us from managing this crisis. I feel like the anti-vaxx movement was a super fringe thing until Fox News picked it up and ran with it.
Imagine how difficult remote learning would have been though. No internet, no zoom, no emails. A whole lot of kids would probably have just missed an entire year of education.
Not Trump/fox/FB definitely makes up for that though.

No promises that it sticks, but I’m friends with a Texas teacher, and her school district is planning to maintain the mask mandate for the schools at least. Of course, that’s cold comfort when a couple dozen germ factories who got pozzed from their parents’ nights on the town come shuffling in, but at least she’s had her first shot.

Yeah. Hopefully the kids won’t be as big of assholes as their parents might be, but obviously some will rebel.
- If it happens, getting every adult vaccinated by May (May!) is a real accomplishment, and one the administration deserves a ton of credit for.
- Where did you get the idea that Biden pledged to vaccinate everyone by April?? Maybe you’re thinking of 100MM doses in the first 100 days? Vaccinating everyone in an additional 40 days is a big step up from that pledge.
- More generally, it’s really just critical to have politicians who see their political future being dependent on getting credit for good things happening. Obviously sometimes they’ll try to pretend to have done good things to get credit for them, but sometimes they’ll just do a decent job and save a bunch of lives. That’s the system working!

If it happens, then I admit I might be mildly jealous of America. That’s especially true since the Czech government just rejected one million AstraZeneca vaccines from India.
The federal government can (and should) override the states on this, so you could just as easily ask why we don’t send all of the US’s doses to some country that’s trying harder.
I follow a lot of the libertarian Kock think tank guys on Twitter and they’re laughable and infuriating. A bunch of #PersonalResponsibility, “No one’s stopping you from wearing a mask”.

40-year-old, no health complications. I just got first dose of Pfizer in Illinois. They said all I needed for eligibility was to work around other people, which I do in an office of anti-maskers.
